Birth Control Pill for acne?

Hey everyone!

I went to get a dermabrasion the other day, and the lady told me that I probably have acne because of a hormone imbalance, and that I should get on the pill to help with it. I've been reading around and it seems to be true, but I'm just wanting to know from some people who have tried it. :-) Any input -good or bad- would be appreciated!

It's just my opinion that no one should take hormones. Try other ways. There are just too many bad effects with taking hormones. I have heard many people say that Proactive is great. Yes, pimples do come from a hormone imbalance,, but there are alternatives to dangerous hormones.

Re: Birth Control Pill for acne?

I'm on birth control to prevent pregnancy, and I must tell you- the pill is NOT a sure-fire way to control hormonal breakouts. I've taken one that was supposed to help but made me worse. I suppose the pill I'm on now might help a bit, but it's certainly no acne cure. Controlling hormonal breakouts is just an added benefit, but the main purpose of the pill is to prevent pregnancy. If you're sexually active, I say definitely go for it. If you aren't, you might want to consider other options.

Re: Birth Control Pill for acne?

Through talking to people I have learned that Birth Control works differently for different people. There are also so many types of birth control that it takes awhile to find one that works for you. A few months after I started on the birth control I noticed that my acne started clearing up. Around that time I also started using the Clearisil Ultra 3 Step System (that is supposed to be like Proactive). I don't know if it was one or the other that helped to clear it up or a combination of both, but my acne is so much better than it was years ago.

A friend used Yasmin for severe cramps. Her dermatologist mentioned it may help with acne and it really has. Acne arrives at puberty, leaves at menopause and gets better with pregnancy, so hormones really do affect it.
Women seem more prone to it during their adult life, so again, appears to be hormone related.
