Question Birth Control Pills and the Female Libido?

Hello, this is my first post here. I was looking for a place to get some answers on this topic, because im a bit iffy about it.

I just started Loestrin 24 FE and I have heard a lot about decreased libido/sex drives and using this pill, as well as it being permanent. I have also heard its different for every women. But exactly what makes it different? Are the women who experience a decrease in libido older women (mid 30's and up), or are they young women (20's)? Does it matter what pill you take or not? Why do some women say they have a decrease, some say are fine, and others claim they have increased their sex drive? Is excersize and healthy eating a factor?

Sorry for the questions that you may not have answers for, but im not going to continue this pill if it can affect my sex drive in such a way that it has affected others.

Re: Birth Control Pills and the Female Libido?

Everyone is different. I read some HORROR stories about Loestrin 24 before I started taking it. I had second thoughts about it, actually. I was only on it for two months before I switched to Microgestin 1/20 (generic = cheaper). While I was on Loestrin (and even Microgestin), I haven't noticed a decrease in libido. I still want it! I may have gained about five pounds, but that's about it. I am no more moody than normal, no more emotional, no more anything. The only other thing-dryness. I just need a bit more attention beforehand, that's all. Other than that, I have been absolutely fine.

There's really no way to say who will experience which side effects. I suggest you just see what happens, and quit or change pills if it becomes necessary.

Re: Birth Control Pills and the Female Libido?

I agree. I've been on quite a few different oral BCP - all with different side effects. The longer acting ones like Loestrin - mainly caused me to eat sweets which in turn caused a small weight gain I guess. I was on Nuvaring for about 15 months and loved it but had severe headaches (lower libido too). all the BC methods have made me have lighter periods and on the ring, I rarely had a period. I am 30 y/o. I have been off the ring now for about 2 weeks and was amazed at how fast the sex drive returns. I'm contemplating the Mirena, but for now will use other forms of BC. Sux being a woman sometimes!
