Is there such a thing a too much insulin

Ok: I have posted here about weight gain since I have been on insulin. I was just told you can inject too much insulin even though you do not go LOW....hhhmmm
And that can cause the weight gain. My Dr has me on a regime of certain numbers, with a sliding scale if they are higher than planned. Could I be injecting too much insulin? How tight do the numbers have to be? I am DP in the morn. Numbers are: morning 8-9 mmol. Lunch 5.0 mmol, supper, 6-7 mmol.
I take 8 units before breakfast 10 units lunch and 18 supper...and 2 units more for every reading 2 mmol higher (RAPID)....55 units levemir 10 pm. . ..

Has anybody ever heard this theory before. Thank you for any input....

Re: Is there such a thing a too much insulin

I find it funny you posted this today.
I was just getting on-line to discuss a simliar issue.
I am taking 50 units of Lantus at night before bed and my numbers are about 160-180 when waking - but the keep rising until about lunch time.
I think the lantus may be keeping me artifically elevated in the morning and the novolog before meals is helping me drop down.
I am wondering if I am taking too much insulin or not even close to enough
or the wrong insulin for me???

You sound like me. I keep rising until about noon and then usually have a sudden drop. Sometimes go low. I make sure I eat at 4 hour intervals. Dawn Phenomenon can do to you. Have you gained weight too...????

I think you may be refering to the notion that high insulin levels are thought to cause weight gain, even in non-diabetics. People with Metabolic Syndrome have normal blood sugars. They have high insulin levels and tend to carry excess weight, but they obviously don't go low. By the same token, the insulin you are injecting could be having a similar effect .

TwoKatts mentions she has DP. For some people DP is caused by the liver dumping glucose, for others it is caused by higher insulin resistance in the morning. I have a very different reaction to 20g of carbs in the morning and afternoon. Probably due to morning cortisol levels.

So if in the morning she is much more insulin resistant, could it be there is excess insulin circulating, causing the weight gain and not dropping the gluocse levels. Just a theory.
