Question Saw an Endo today!

Had a thorough exam, she ordered bloodwork to do this weekend; 24 hr. urine collection. I insisted she test me for the thyroid antibodies after reading my first response to my labs from MG. So she added that but also check for lipids, hepatic and a GGT? I was wondering why.

Just as MG was betting, she is thinking we're looking at Hashi's & wants to see if the tests support her theory.

That being said, while my blood pressure is normal, my resting heart rate is still high (97-110) but she can't give beta blockers because I'm asthmatic. Does anyone else with any thyroid problem also have COPD/asthma as well? If so, how are you being treated? I'd be interested in being a very informed patient.

Any feedback appreciated!

Re: Saw an Endo today!

Not ignoring you. I am checking sources. I will get back to you on it later.

I am glad to help and that you seem to have found a decent Endo!

Re: Saw an Endo today!

Glad you found a good doctor. I have asthma, in fact it was so bad that a year ago my lung function was only 50%. I also take beta blockers, Toprol XL, and have for years. Before my thyroid storm was up to 200 mg. a day. In the hospital they continued to give me the 200 mg. of Toprol along with Spriva and Asmanex just like home. My cardiologist told me that being on the 200 mg. of beta blocker before and during the storm saved my life pure and simple.

Re: Saw an Endo today!

FDA and NIH facts:
Well as you know beta blockers are drugs used to control blood pressure and heart disease. Sometimes they are given to people who have anxiety or headaches or migraines. I was given this for migraines. I have mild asthma. This group of drugs has many members including propranolol (brand name: Inderal), atenolol (brand name: Tenormin) and metoprolol (brand names: Lopressor, Toprol). All of the drugs in this group can make asthma worse. They do not necessarily make it worse. There are current cardiology studies saying in mild asthmatics one should try inderal or pindolol. If this is done, you have to be monitored closely and should stop if your asthma gets worse. If you detect worsening symptoms they of course advise you to tell your doctor immediately.

Now there are other ways to help blood pressure and HR. ACE inhibitors are another type of medicine. ACEs can treat blood pressure, heart disease and, sometimes, diabetes. What are some ACEs: captopril (brand name: Capoten), enalapril (brand name: Vasotec) and lisinopril (brand names: Prinivil, Zestril) are a few examples. From all the studies reviewed ACEs appear to be safe for people with asthma. Now as with all meds there are side effects, some people develope a chronic cough when taking ACE inhibitors.

Okay.. that is a summary of what I dug up using the NIH studies and archives. DINNER TIME!

Re: Saw an Endo today!

MG! I didn't think you were ignoring me - I know how busy life can be - between marriage and children and dealing with illness and trying to be so pro active for your own health and helping others to do the same. And I am forever thankful for finding this space where I can find more information than I ever imagined - I always thought the important stuff would come from a doctor! Not so, obviously.

I just didn't know that you could have normal blood pressure but a high resting heart rate...
