Magnesium Supplemenation Question

Hello!

Here I am - back with ANOTHER question!! Bet you are all surprised

I began taking a Magnesium Supplement (250 mg Magnesium Oxide) each morning with my yogurt. Its been a couple of weeks of me taking it each day - just once per day.

I was trying to help naturally lower my B/P and my heart rate. I could not get my heart rate down once I stopped the Prednisone - the benefit was that as soon as I took the magnesium each day my heart rate would drop. It seemed to 'wear off' about 6:30pm each day (I take it at 5:30am)...

Anyway my question is can you get too much magnesium? The past couple of days I have felt WEIRD - like someone has my back and lungs in a VICE GRIP tight tight tight - not asthma like- almost like the muscles are locked up or something. They are tight and painful - its the weirdes thing and I just cannot figure it out.

I eat a lot of fish, veggies, nuts, etc. - is the magnesium supplement too much? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not taken it today and my heart is RACING LIKE CRAZY....

Thanks

Nessa

Re: Magnesium Supplemenation Question

Hi Vanessa,

Sorry to hear about your present dilemma. I wouldn't take any supplements unless I had a documented need via blood tests. Dr. says the various minerals etc. need to be kept in balance so if you increase one then it throws the other ones off.Fam

Re: Magnesium Supplemenation Question

Hi,

Magnesium lowers my heart rate as about 75% of the Beta-Blockers effect, with no side effects. I have been on it for over 2 years, and if you search the boards you will find out that there are people taking it for a long time without side effects. Our bodies needs around 350mg of Magnesium, I take 250mg daily in the form of supplements.
Good luck,
Michael

Re: Magnesium Supplemenation Question

Vanessa,

Unless there are kidney issues, it's difficult to "od" on magnesium because healthy kidneys get rid of the excess (it is not stored in the body). The DASH people recommend at least 500 mgs per day and you may or may not be getting that amount even with a supplement.

Magnesium oxide, the kind you're taking, although relatively inexpensive, is not well aborbed in the body. Other forms of magnesium may be more beneficial.

The symptoms you're describing (chest tightness, difficulty breathing) can be a symptom of a magnesium deficiency. I don't know if that's what you're experiencing, but you might want to read up on the symptoms of magnesium deficiency to see if you're losing or gaining ground.
