My Son Was Up All Night

So we started new meds yesterday (Vyvanse) and he came home throwing up (don't know if he had a bug he said he felt a little sick to his stomach even before he took the meds) and then last night didn't get to sleep till 3:00 a.m.!!! This child has always been the child that loves his sleep and will be out usually by 8:00ish! He kept coming in our room saying mom I just can't sleep and I felt helpless. I tried everything but it was like he was geared up and couldn't get settled. We are trying the meds again today to see how it goes, but if this keeps up we will have to switch off.

The other prescription they gave us to get filled is the patch one. I have heard a few things that there is skin irritation and other problems. Is there also this nighttime issue?

Thanks everyone I feel so confused right now trying to find what is the best medicine for him.

Blessings!

Re: My Son Was Up All Night

Insomnia is a very common side effect, sometimes, the insomnia gets better after a few days. The vomiting, not a very common side effect, most likely he just had a bug. Maybe give him a day or two to get better, then try the medicine again?

That's a slow-release drug, right? If he keeps having problems with insomnia, maybe he needs something that passes through the system more quickly.

The patch causes the same sleep problems. It's a stimulant, it can interfere with sleep. However, you might be able to take it off earlier in the day so it wears off quicker.

Re: My Son Was Up All Night

My son had the same reaction to Vyvanse (30mg). Would not eat; would not sleep (of course he has this with most anything he's on - my doc says it's fine to give him one of the OTC natural sleep pills when he needs it); upset stomach; and headaches. We tried Focaline XR (20mg) and he ate good but it didn't last long enough in the day. They don't make a 30mg pill and I can't swing two Rx a month so we're back on Concerta but next higher dose.
