Chronic Constipation (Seven weeks and counting...)

I have been constipated for nearly six weeks now, and rather gassy on top of it. For the past two weeks I have been on a daily dose of miralax. It helps occasionally, but I still strain. My GI doctor told me to take it for 4-6 weeks and if it does not clear up he might want to do a colonoscopy. I have about two weeks left before the four week mark. Alot of times I strain to go as well, and have to "Force" it out. I get abdonomal cramping if I can't go as well. I'm frustrated at this point, and really don't know what is going on. Does anyone have chronic constipation? And how do you deal with it? What is the cause?

My only real relief is during my period. Would it be okay to stop it during my period? I have been. I have semi-normal bowls during this time, and the urge to go is quite frequent...I did not want to add a laxative on top of this.

My gallbladder was removed in October of last year, if that relates to this at all (although I have been told it does not by my GI doctor, but these problems did not start until after it was removed)

Re: Chronic Constipation (Seven weeks and counting...)

I was just told on tuesday that i have chronic constipation. They are doing a colonoscopy on tuesday and i have have external hemorids from this. so they are going to do banding as well. I started eating a cup of fiber one cereal in the morning and eating a fiber one bar in the afternoon and vegies with fiber for dinner. I was able to go after the first day. Not as much as i would have liked but i did go. With having the external hemroid it makes it more painful to go than not to at this point. I don't know alot because of just being told. However i have lived with this most of mine life not knowing why i could not go like everyone else. Hopefully after tuesday maybe i can tell you more.

Re: Chronic Constipation (Seven weeks and counting...)

Funny, I had my gall bladder out in 1996 and I have the same problem. Some meds cause it as well. I am also on prelosic for acid reflux. I am doomed to live with this for the reset of my life, I'm afraid. I have tried everything on the market including things like DGL and juices such as pomegranate and mango. I am at a loss. Grrrhhhh.

Re: Chronic Constipation (Seven weeks and counting...)

I have suffered constipation my entire life. I found a product that I have used for several years now. I had tried Miralax, Zelnorm, diet, fiber, metamucel, and many of the natural remedies. Some work, but only for a limited time. This has worked for several years. South Mountain Hydration Formula.
