Help for my son

I have an 8 year old son who has been diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities. He recently had testing done by the school that showed he has extremely high results for Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning (Superior range) But yet he still can't read (he's in the third grade) He has alot of behavioral issues as well, and a younger brother with autism.

His pediatrician started him on Adderall XR at the end of the last school year, however this year I began to have some concerns. His teacher and I both notice that the medication made a HUGE difference in his ability to focus. My son really says it helps him too. However, I began to see that when he comes home from school, and there's really nothing left to focus on...its like he has a melt down. He cries and whines, makes funny noises, hits himself, throws himself around...repeats, "What can I do? What can I do?" It gets so bad that it scares me...its almost like a phsycotic episode. I even decided to try and video tape the episodes to share with his doctor. I went to speak with his teacher and share my concerns and all she seemed to care about was that the meds were working in the classroom...and I better not stop them because they are working there. I went to the pediatrician and told her my concerns and she wrote me a new prescription for a smaller dose of Dexedrine as she says this med doesn't last as long and perhaps he'll do better on this one.

I really hate giving him meds at all, but I am at a loss of what to do because his academic self-esteem is so low...he needs an interpreter and a scribe in the classroom whenever they take tests because he still can't read. He tries so hard and it breaks my heart. I really haven't gotten anywhere with his specialists....just a runaround....at the last meeting I had with the specialist she agreed that my son may also be on the autism spectrum like his brother, but gave me no advice or access to resources.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Re: Help for my son

momofanangel,

My heart goes out to you and your children.

I'll do what I can to help. Just afraid that won't be much.

Your son's extremely high verbal skills and perceptual reasoning IQ scores are part of the ADHD signature. "Rarely does ADHD travel alone," as one author put it. Expect co-existing problems and be prepared to factor them into the prescription plan.

My best guess is your son's after-school crisis is ADHD rebound. When the meds wear off, ADHD symptoms return with a vengence. Generally extended release formulas lessen rebound. So can a less potent drug such as Concerta. And in certain cases all stimulants simply make matters worse.

Be sure to get a copy of Dr. Daniel Amen's book, "Healing ADHD ... its six subtypes." Study it. Then be sure to get Dr. Amen's latest prescription recommendations for each of the six subtypes.

Be forewarned that Dr. Amen is not loved by the psychiatric community. He book, his recommendations, work for me. They work for many others suffering from ADHD and other mental disorders. The proof is in the pudding.

Re: Help for my son

Thank you so much! I will get the book!!! Today was the first day of the dexedrine (so too early to tell) but he didn't have any episode today after school...I'll keep watch and see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Re: Help for my son

Well, its been a while now...and I am sorry to say that the episodes are back (though not quite as bad as they were).

When he was taking the Adderall, I would stop giving it on weekends and holidays...but I don't think that its possible with the Dexedrine. I notice that if I don't give him the meds on the weekends, that it takes until Wednesday for these meds to start to really work again. Must need to build up in his system??

I also went to his school midway through the year as I heard of a Literacy based school (government funded) that specializes in kids with ADHD etc. The school sounds fantastic and only accepts 8 children to a class. His current school is supposed to apply on his behalf....well, the teacher at the school that was supposed to be putting in this application just called me and very rudely (chuckling as she told me like it is funny and some kind of joke) told me that she had been late in handing in his application so we missed his window of opportunity for next year. I am soooooo angry and frusterated!!!!! This time is so critical for his future....just at my wits end!!!

Re: Help for my son

Dexedrine should be just as short-acting as Adderall, it doesn't need to build up in the system. But, if he does better taking it every day, then do that.
