I have an 8 year old son who has been diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities. He recently had testing done by the school that showed he has extremely high results for Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning (Superior range) But yet he still can't read (he's in the third grade) He has alot of behavioral issues as well, and a younger brother with autism.
His pediatrician started him on Adderall XR at the end of the last school year, however this year I began to have some concerns. His teacher and I both notice that the medication made a HUGE difference in his ability to focus. My son really says it helps him too. However, I began to see that when he comes home from school, and there's really nothing left to focus on...its like he has a melt down. He cries and whines, makes funny noises, hits himself, throws himself around...repeats, "What can I do? What can I do?" It gets so bad that it scares me...its almost like a phsycotic episode. I even decided to try and video tape the episodes to share with his doctor. I went to speak with his teacher and share my concerns and all she seemed to care about was that the meds were working in the classroom...and I better not stop them because they are working there. I went to the pediatrician and told her my concerns and she wrote me a new prescription for a smaller dose of Dexedrine as she says this med doesn't last as long and perhaps he'll do better on this one.
I really hate giving him meds at all, but I am at a loss of what to do because his academic self-esteem is so low...he needs an interpreter and a scribe in the classroom whenever they take tests because he still can't read. He tries so hard and it breaks my heart. I really haven't gotten anywhere with his specialists....just a runaround....at the last meeting I had with the specialist she agreed that my son may also be on the autism spectrum like his brother, but gave me no advice or access to resources.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
