CT abdomen/Pelvic Scan

I am scheduled for a CT abdomen/pelvic scan next week and was wondering what everyone's experience was like. I believe they will give me something to drink beforehand, just wanted to know how that was as well.

Anything you can share will be great!

Re: CT abdomen/Pelvic Scan

matty boston--I had this test in the beginning for my GERD and nothing was found. I was complaining about a sensation that something was moving. Nothing was found. I was DX'ed 8 yrs later with a HH when I was scoped last year. That must have been what I was feeling, although, I have been told from doctors that you do not feel a HH. What a crock!

To answer your question.......The test was something like 44 or 64 I really don't remember slices. The looked at all the organs from the lung base down to the pelvis. Takes a little while, I think over a hour. The dye is injected at the end and you go back in. If you are allergic there is a different kind they can give you. You have to drink one milk shake type drink the night before (this is what I did) one the next morning, thought that I was all done, then when I got there they handed me another. I am not good with this type of drink (thick) and I also have a bad gag reflex, I only got part of that one down and the tech said that was enough. After, they may not tell you, but you have to drink LOTS of water to wash down out that stuff. If not, you could become constipated from it. In the more ~advanced facilities~ (teaching hospital) they do not use this drink anymore they use something more like a fruit drink that does not bother people like me. We don't have this yet where I live. That's it, sit tight and wait for the results! Good luck to you. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: CT abdomen/Pelvic Scan

matty boston--Can I ask what reason you are having this test done for? I was told later by the tech that this was overkill for my symptoms and GERD. FYI--Not to scare you, to inform you, there is also a lot of radiation given in the CT Scan as you may already know. I would only have this again if it were medically necessary. There are many other tests that can be performed. Maybe you need it and that is fine. In my case the tech did not agree with the doctor. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: CT abdomen/Pelvic Scan

I had an abdominal CT scan - for severe abdominal pain, etc. Thankfully I did not have to drink any of that barrium stuff (VERY CHALKY) and Flower is SO RIGHT - makes you gag a bit (I had to take it for a swallowing test). As far as tests go - all you really have to do is lay there and let them scan you - sometimes hold your breath for a few seconds. Its very simple.

I hope you start to feel better SOON and get some answers.
