My fellow LPR sufferers, I have been researching the difference between LPR and GERD the past few days and I wanted to share my findings.
-Continual throat clearing - Swallowed food comes back up
-Chronic throat irritation -Excessive mucus in throat
-Chronic cough -Difficulty swallowing
-Hoarseness -Post nasal drainage
-Lump in the throat -Bad bitter taste in the mouth
-Weak voice -Asthma like symptoms
-Ear pain/persistent ear infections -Bad breath (from sinusitis)
I experienced all of the above and most of the early doctors I saw, who weren’t familiar with LPR did not put them together with the reflux issues I had. 71% of LPR patients complain of hoarseness, 47% complain of excessive mucus in the throat, and 51% complain of excessive coughing, again all symptoms I have. Other manifestations of LPR include asthma and sinusitis, which occur due to mucosal irritation.
LPR occurs when acid passes through both sphincters the LES and UES. Patients with LPR generally experience upright/daytime reflux while patients with GERD experience more nighttime lying down reflux.
I hope this helps someone out there because it explained everything I was going through and help me distinguish whether I was suffering from allergy problems or reflux problems, at first I wasn’t sure. Now I know they are both one in the same with LPR.
