Bacterial Infection reoccurance

I have been sick for the last three weeks. The second week of september, I had a common cold, last week it developed into a bacterial sinus infection (at least that is what the doc told me it was). He placed me on this antibiotic Sandoz-Azithromycin which is part of the macrolide family.

My symptoms are a sore throat for at least two days, a chronic cough which comes in bursts. there is often mucus that comes up from the lungs whether it is a greenish brown or clear which is more predominant in the morning when i first wake up. The lymph glands in my neck were sore and it was painful to swallow things whether it was food, water or saliva.

I took the medication for its full time being prescribed and suffered some of the side effects, which were nasea and diarrhea. My boyfriend caught the same bacterial infection that i had.

As of sunday morning when i woke up to go to work, i started feeling the same symptoms. sore throat and cough that comes in short bursts and when i do cough, mucus is released and sometimes the cough is so long that i would struggle to breathe.

Is it possible in developing the same infection twice? If so, what should i do? contact my family physican even though it is difficult to get into see him.

I have taken cough syrup, halls and other means on supressing the cough, nothing seems to work. I took the anitbiotic for the full course that it was prescribed. It's a vicious cycle. What can i do in the time being?

Re: Bacterial Infection reoccurance

Best advice now is to see your Doctor ASAP!

Since you said that you took the full course of the antibiotic treatment...it does seem unlikely that the infection is not treated.

There can be two things that could have happened...
1. Antibiotic resistant strain.
2. Secondary infection (highly unlikely in the given time frame!).
Don't be too alarmed, there is always a way to treat this.

Whether its sinus infection, I'm not too sure. However, sinus infections often results in with facial pain. Another possibility could be that the infection could have spread to your throat or lungs [due to you describing the constant cough that won't go away] (it is a possibility, but that's a guess as I don't know what type of bacterial infection you have).

Azithromycin targets the respiratory tract and sinus for bacterial infections. I was wondering what dose you took?
If it was sinus what was the instruction that your doctor and pharmacist gave you on this (including strength of the tablet)?

For now, you would need cough syrup for a productive cough. This loosens the phlegm allowing it to be coughed up more easily.

Hope you get well soon!

Re: Bacterial Infection reoccurance

I went to the clinic today and my own family doctor was there.

The doctor last week prescribed 250mg. My doc told it can work in the system for at least 10 days. They told me take two tablets the first day, and one every day after that for 5 days. My doctor gave me another prescription to fill out around saturday if i am not any better by the end of the week.

I have been taking cough syrup, strepsils and it's like they don't get rid of the sore throat. They are more like candy than anything. Are there any other alternatives for sore throats that you may suggest?

Re: Bacterial Infection reoccurance

o.k that seems right - 500mg first day then 250mg day 2 to 5.

There is something on the market for sore throat, its an anti-inflammatory called Difflam. Active ingredient: Benzydamine hydrochloride 0.15% (which is...15mg/ml i think...).

Think in Canada they are called: Apo-Benzydamine®; Dom-Benzydamine; Novo-Benzydamine; PMS-Benzydamine; ratio-Benzydamine; Sun-Benz®; Tantum®

Personally i haven't tried this, but if you want that's the option other than the conventional ones you get in the supermarket.

Talk to a pharmacist about this, as this is a pharmacy only medicine
