Question Kidney Stones

My husband has had kidney stones for the last 3 years on and off. He has always had so much pain with passing them. Now we found out he has 2 more stones. One of which doctor said is too big to pass. So this week he is going in hospital as outpatient to have the stones pushed into the kidneys and then blasted. Doctor talked about having stents put in. We are wondering if anyone else had this done and what kind of pain is involved in the entire process? Thanks

Hi, BluEyes966
I've had several of these done in the past four years They will probably
give him an epideral , so they can move him from the tub where they shock the stones, to a table where they put the stent in which will probably go all the way up to the kidney to help the stone fragments pass easier. after the litrotrips. the docs. say it 's not going to hurt, but for me it huuurrrt. really bad after. couldn't walk well for a couple of days, really bruised.
The stent will probably stay in for a week, the urologist will pull it out at his office. he is going to have a string hanging out with a knot , make sure the string is long enough, because men get erections at night and the morning and the string will disappear, scary the first time it happened to me, but once you pee it will come out .he'll have discomfort urinating till the stent is removed .
i' ve have passed 144 and i'm only 28yrs.old. the docs. told me the reason it hurts me so much because I've have passed so many , and it has damaged the kidney's or tubes. Hope this helps , and good luck it's not as bad as passing a large stone.

Hey Thanks Kidneystone for your reply. My husband had his surgery 6/7/01 and everything went well. Funny thing is, when they went in after the big stone they couldnt find it. They shot dye up his right side ureter and it came back down. They believe it was just something showing up on the xray like shadowing (which would explain why he NEVER had any pain on his right side). They did go in his left side ureter with the telescope and snagged the little stone on that side that happen to be lodged in there for months. He came home after about an hour and had a good bit of pain. They sent him home with his catheter and stent still in there. Next morning he had both removed since he had nothing to pass out. He has since been peeing blood and a few blood clots. He has had major ureter spasms that have been painful. If it wasnt for those spasms, he wouldnt need the aid of the pain medication. He said his left side kidney ached some. Today (6 days later) he finally went back to work. I'm not sure how thats gonna go being that everynow and then he gets those ureter spasms. He goes back to the Urologist in 1 month to start the 24 hour urine collection to see why and what is causing these stones so frequently. Well I got to go, just wanted to let ya know how things went. Thanks again Kidney stone!
