Post arthritis

My 18 year old son recently had an operation on his hip to remove a tumor, however as a result of this he has developed osteoarthritis, he is unable to place his foot on the floor due to great pain, and has to use crutchs. His consultant is not willing to perform a hip replacement at this time, prefering to wait to see what happens to his hip.Can anyone please give me any information about my sons condition, why can't he have a hip replacement? What would the effects be if he had a hip replacement now? How have replacement hips evolved, are they any better than say ten or even five years age? I would be grateful for any feedback. Many thanks Dave UK
