Question Help! Whats an I.E.P and what issues should I...

My 9 yeard old ADHD son who is in 4th grade now, is worst in behavior since the end of 3rd grade last year. Lots of physical outburts and basic escalating of the 'usual' issues related to the ADHD.

Yes I am getting his current meds reviewd (Concerta 36 mg) and continued counseling.

After getting suspended for hitting a boy over a trivial playground issue on the 8th day of school, I asked both the in school counselor, his teacher and the principal to GIVE US SOME HELP.

We are scheduled for an IEP? I think that is some individual ? program? What is it, What issues do I need to bring to their attention and what should I ask for or to expect. I'm tired of the underfunded school system not offering any pliable solutions for my son. He is very bright, no learning disabilities scholastically except for the listening and follow through....

What do I ask for? What?

Any help would be very much appreciated. A tough start to his school year...

Hi. An IEP is an Individual Education Plan. In this plan you decide what accomodations your son needs to do his best in school. You can ask for accomodations like tutors, untimed tests, counseling at school and anything else he might need. You and his teachers also decide other things he can work on. For your son one thing might be peer relations (getting along with the other kids) and then they would decide what can be done to help him reach his goal of getting along better with his peer group. There are some great websites you can check out ( I dont know if theyre allowed to be posted here) if you email me I will email them to you.

Hi Kristen,

An IEP is for a child in special education. They would have to ask you for permission to test your son and test him. The first meeting would begin with a meeting to determine if your child has a disability based on the test results and if the child needs to be placed in special ed. If your son does not qualify for special ed, you should ask for a 504 Plan. Many of the same people would be involved. Some kids with ADD/ADHD do not belong in special ed, but a 504 plan can still provide modifications in the regular classroom.
