Post Damaged Nail!

Hi,

Marti,I was hoping you could maybe help me with this if possible,I took a heavy blow to the base of my thumb nail and now the area where the white half moon should be is very deep purple and a bit green in some areas.I was wondeing if this will heal itself or should i do something for it?.PS i was hoping the nail would fall off as it is the one with a fungal infection.Any chance of this?

Thanks

Hi,

A while back I dropped something on my toenail. It went blue and didnt drop off or anything but the bruising under the toe took about 7 months to go away. It hurt sometimes, especially when i'd knock it. If your worried or it hurts like crazy, go to your doctor to get it removed but otherwise it should heal it self. In the meantime-wear nailpolish!

Hope that helped.

Depending on the depth of the damage, the nail may or may not 'fall off' as it grows forward on the nail bed. The discoloration is simply an accumulation of blood between the plate and the nail bed and is called a hematoma. The doctor can relieve some of the pressure if it is hurting you by drilling a hole in the plate and allowing the accumulation of "fresh" blood to disperse through the hole. A new nail will grow forward from the nail root behind and possible under the lifted portion of damaged plate.
