Post Big Toe Nail Problem *Please Help*

Hey everyone,
I purchased a new pair of ski boots this year (which were professionally fitted to my foot) and I have been out 4 times semi-aggressive skiing.

The second time I was out I felt and after clearing a fairly large bump I felt some discomfort on my big toe, only later to find it a bit bruised. Well, this progressed to my nail completely wanting to fall off (after 4th time out). I trimmed my nail to under 1/2 length which would prevent any interfernce while skiing, etc. Can this potentially become infected? Was it a mistake to cut my nail so short? Will my nail grow back ok?

I have been treating the nail with hydrogen peroxide to minimize infection. It does not hurt at all and the nail is a white color. Is it recommended I see a podiatrist or is this self-treatable?

NOTE: This is my 3rd nail on the same foot problem, however, others grew back with no problem.

Thanks for any help that can be provided!

I think you should seek the advice of a Podiatrist. Plus, the Podiatrist can suggest ways of preveting this problem again so you can enjoy continuing skiing without a recurrence of the same problem happening.

You have experienced a Hematoma (bruise) to the big toenail. Trimming it back will help, but if the entire nail is effected, the nail will eventually fall off and be replaced with a new one. Most people who participate in aggressive type sports experience hematoma to the toe nails. It is not normally a problem, but in your case, you went skiing with a new pair of boots that were not broken in; hence the hematoma. Give it time to completely heal before attemoting to ski in an agressive manner again. Give the boots time to break into your feet!

Keep the area clean and dry at all times, and clip off any part of nail that loosens up and lifts from the nail bed. Bandage the toe with gauze and a 'breathable' tape to protect the nail bed until a new nail emerges. You are right to use the peroxide to clean the wound, but only do so until it does not 'bubble' when applied. After that, use an antibiotic ointment under the bandage. Only bandage the toe for a couple of weeks, and only when wearing shoes; otherwise, leave it open to the air.
