First, get a VERY good trim. Get rid of any split ends/damaged hair.

Then, start taking a supplement called "BIOTIN". I guess there isn't that much of it in multivitamins, but you can purchase this supplement on its own.
It is excellent for hair and nails.

Also, start using a very good deep conditioner. I love Aussie's 3-minute Miracle (it's not too expensive), but there are a lot of good ones out there.
Salon products aren't necessarily better.

You should also look into your diet. Are you eating enough healthy foods?

Massage your scalp. Brush your hair often. This stimulates circulation, which in turn makes your scalp healthy.

Good luck.

Yes, get a good trim. Then, (Ok, maybe I'm the only person who does this and I'm a bit ocd but..) everyday check your hair for split ends and snip em off.....ok now that I think about it I may be a little too obsessive with my hair...by hey, it works. Now when washing your hair don't pile it on top and rub it like a mad woman, sleek it downward, it prevents frizzies and friction from rubbing the hair together. (And please make sure you let your conditioner sit for a few minutes, so many people plop it on and just rince it out right away.) Next, wait for your hair to dry before you brush it...wet hair is like wet paper, it's very fragile and running a brush through it will only cause breakage. Try not to apply heat to it often either, and when brushing start from the tips of your hair to the top instead of starting from the roots which causes knots. Once untangled you can brush from root to end. Every week, I apply olive oil to my hair and let it sit for an hour (usually more), then I take a shower and wash it out...this makes my hair super soft. If your scalp is oily then apply it just to the tips (you can also use mayonaise but I happen to find the smell repulsing.) Ok, well that's all I can think of off the top of my hair I mean head;-) If I htink of any more I'll be sure to come bakc and edit, good luck.

SankofA, what does that mane and tail shampoo do for you? I saw it at CVS and was thinking about getting it but I am not sure yet. I hate when I spend money on products and it doesn't work.
