Question ciggarettes a day - how much damage??

i smoke about 2 or 3 cigarettes a day, and am trying to quit for good.
i was told by somebody that you have to smoke at least 7 cigarettes a day to be considered a smoker, and that if you smoke less than 7 a day that your lungs can regenerate faster than the cigarettes can destroy them.
is this really true?? if so, how much am i damaginf my lungs by smoking about 2 - 3 a day? are my lungs healing fater than the cigarettes are destroying them?

please reply, thanks.
