Post Was back problem now Cervical???

About 4 months ago had a microdisectomy for a ruptured disc, that greatly improved the leg pain. However, as of three weeks ago after waking up one morning with a "crick" in my neck I have progressed to severe arm pain with loss of strength in the affected arm. I find no position comfortable (or without pain) nighttime is especially the worst. I am going to consult my ortho doctor, but curious if anyone has had the same symptoms & what thier prognosis & treatment was.
Thanks
Ang

Hi, Ang. Sorry to hear about your neck pain. I'm sure when you see the doctor that he'll order a CT-scan or an MRI but let me share my story. Four years ago I woke up with neck pain so bad that I could not lift my head off the pillow. I had to roll onto my side to the edge of the bed and actually use my hands to pick up my head. This came out of nowhere - no accident or fall or anything. Since then its been on and off neck and shoulder pain. In November I had another bad episode - finally an MRI was ordered and it showed three herniated discs, one of them pressing on the spinal cord. I don't have much problems with my arms but I am told this is very odd - most people with cervical herniations do. (Most of my problems are in my legs.)

Until you see the doctor you could try moist heat and Ibuprofen helped me some. Anyway, rest up and try to feel better.

Renee

P.S. Where did you have the discectomy done? And how were you injured?

2/24/03 One-Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy with donor bone and titanium plate (C5-6)
Post 2/03 - Symptoms returned and worsening. Weakness in my legs is like walking against a 50 mph wind - pain in lower back and all the way down my right leg to the ankle - vertigo, muscle spasms in trunk and legs
7/03 EEG, BAERS and MRI of brain all normal
7/03 MRI of lumbar spine showed mild herniated disc (L4/5) with moderate to severe DDD and edema in the endplates. HOLDING OUT FOR ARTIFICIAL DISC REPLACEMENT!

Red face

Hate to be the one to tell you Ang, but it's very common to have back probs after neck surgery and vise versa. my sister had cervical surgery 1st then a year later her back went. I'm 6 weeks post-op for c-7 surgery and I hope my back doen't go cause I've always had (slack) in my lombar. I had a spinal tap in 1987 and was never the same. One thing that helped me alot in the beginig was to avoid sleeping o my stomach...that would really cause problems. now I'm a side sleeper only and no more ded hands. good luck

Re: Was back problem now Cervical???

Hi Everyone..

I had a cervical dissectomy on two herniated disc in July 06. Slow recovery process...minimal pain after surgery. About 3 weeks ago I started having sciatic pain that gets really intense and neck and shoulder pain. Still on pain meds. Also have a vibration sensation down my spinal cord when I tip my head forward..Going back to Dr. on 11/15 anyone else familiar with any of these symptoms?

Chris
