The way I understand it is that there are two types of stroke: One is cause by a hemorage (bleeding in the brain) The other is caused by a blood clot which blocks off blood flow to the brain. So sorry to hear about your aunt. There are quite a few good websites on this which help explain it better than I

Kristi,

Angie is correct that there is two types of strokes, clot (the most common) and haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain cavity). There are however many different types and causes. Some are AVM (malformation of arteries), Anuryism, drug abuse. In my own case it was elements in my blood being out-of-whack, the elements predisposed me to clotting (see my reply in 'clotting disorder).

16 months ago I had an arterial clot complicated with a haemorrhage between the cerebellum and brain stem. Post op I had a large DVT left leg and for good measure a pulmonary embolism.

I was in a coma for 5 days, quadruplegic for 4 weeks, learnt to walk in 5 weeks. Over the past year I have progressed from 9 hours a week to 30 hours a week at work, and regained my drivers license.

When 60% of people with this type of stroke dont make it I consider myself lucky to have made a 100% recovery.

Peter

This message is for Peter, my dad had a stroke two thursdays ago, and is in ICU (Intensive Care Unit). Affected right side, cannot move arm or leg only a little, speech is impaired, do u think he too has a good chance to be the same at least a little??? He is 63! they said it was a cerebral hemorrage, they also did a craniotomy to allow for the swelling to expand. Im so lost, please help!!!!!
