Post Medications after stroke.

while at the er, and just before transported to a larger hospital, i was given ativan iv which knocked me out. I remember little about the next two days. Do they continue to sedate you, or did I have a prolonged reaction to the ativan. No one seems to answer this question. I do have these type reactions to many drugs.

Ativan is lorazepam, a potent hypnotic/sedative/anxiolytic benzodiazepine. When given IV it has a rapid plama peak concentration of about 20-30mins and a halflife of over 16hrs. Depending on your age, weight, current mental state, renal and liver function could vary this halflife to over 60hrs. It also has associated amnesic effects so you will probably not remember much about what happened following the injection or have a distorted view of what you think happened - you also lose all sense of time.

Hope this helped answer some of your questions

Regards
R.

Thanks for the information. I have asked this question, and more or less got blown off. The er gave it to me because I asked to leave, and was refused..I have an odd reaction to advil, it knocks me out, and had taken this less than two hours before the ativan. I have intermitant recollection of things that happened after transfer to another hospital. (The first er didnot diagnose stroke at all, the second said it was approximately two weeks old.) The first one gave me the ativan, I am assuming to make me more cooperative. Anyway thanks for letting me know what I suspected about the ativan. By the way, the stroke did no massive damage, only thing effected at that time was left hand was less than functional, but that was over by the time I got home. Thanks again.
