Ive had sinusitis on and on since October last year. Im really fed up, it triggers my asthma too and so I spend a lot of time not able to breathe and not able to sleep. I thought I was getting over it but Ive spent the last few weeks not sleeping and with tight head, sore head, nasal congestion and pain everywhere. Im also now feeling very tired and by mid afternoon Im shattered.
Ive had 3 courses of antibiotics, I steam with vicks and also do nasal irrigation and Im still suffering. Can anyone provide any clues or any help to get me over this. I don't want more antibiotics, I just want to get rid of this once and for all.
Consider seeing an ENT specialist. You may be a candidate for surgery. I suffered with chronic sinusitis for nearly a year before getting sinus surgery. I've been infection free for nearly 2 years now.

Thanks. I am going to go to the Drs today and hope I'll have time to ask for a referral.
Im feeling really shattered now, so tired that I am unable to work today. Ive read that sinusitis can cause fatigue but don't know how really.
Just wanted to ask, in the absence of drugs I have been steaming with Vicks and also doing neti pot washes. Just wondered if anyone knew whether its a good idea to do this or not - should I stick to one only or will they work together?
Oh how I can relate. I've been fighting the infection since September now. I also smoke though, which I've cut down alot.. hopefully quitting soon. I've tried all kinds of antibiotics and even had an inhaler for bronchitis. After 4 visits to my regular doctor, I went to an ENT who did nothing for me because I smoke and have no insurance So if it helps.. you're not alone I am so miserable. It really does just make you so tired. I just generally feel cruddy all the time..

You might want to consider that acid reflux could be causing your sinusitis. It caused mine, and I was going nuts for a year before a smart doctor started treating me for reflux instead of sinusitis. As soon as I was treated for reflux with Nexium 2x a day, the sinusitis disappeared - that same day. On any search engine you can search for sinusitis and acid reflux and lots of stuff comes up - this isn't an insignificant relationship. There is strong and proven cause and effect.
It might not be reflux, but since reflux is really easy to treat, you might as well give it a shot. You just need to get a prescription for a PPI, taken 2x per day (preferably Nexium, which is best at treating sinusitis-like symptoms caused by reflux). Most doctors don't know you need the PPI 2x per day and will prescribe one dose. However, just make sure you take 2, and then you can experiment with lowering the dose AFTER you've gotten better. Also, there is a lot of information on the GERD board about this. Sinusitis-like symptoms caused by acid reflux are called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).
Hi and thanks for the replies.
Its interesting about the acid reflux - I had forgotten that acid reflux can cause sinusitis. I have actually been under investigation for gerd in the past and at the time it turned out I had it but it was being caused by a drug I was taking.
I do have other symptoms of sinusitis though - the headache, cheekbones hurting, nasal congestion, eyes really dry, really bad smell in my nose. I will continue with the antibiotics and nasal spray for now but I will mention it to my gp if I don't get better. Thanks.
Erika, Im very sympathetic. Its so frustrating to be feeling like this and to have these rubbish symptoms. Lets hope that we both get some relief asap. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Acid Reflux can cause sinusitis. If the antibiotics don't work, there is no harm in trying reflux medication.
Here's how reflux causes sinusitis: the acid gets into the throat, which mixes with the throat mucous. That mucous distributes the acid throughout the nasal passages and sinuses, creating erosions (like ulcers in your nasal passages). These are uncofortable, painful and can get infected, leaving you with pain, headache, bad smells, etc. How acid impacts your head and throat is very very different than how it effects your esophogous (when it stays in your esophogous). Simply put, don't think of it as just hearburn. It's also causes sinusitis. Bacteria are not the only ones that cause sinusitis.
I can completely relate. I've had 2 sinus surgeries in the past and have another infection right now--its a never ending cycle for me. Im on antibiotics a lot--it gets very frustrating. I used to see you over at the inner ear board--how is your dizziness? Mine is not any better at all.
Hope you feel better soon!!!!!
Thanks for the replies and thanks for the explanation about gerd causing sinusitis Aswander. I see now that I could have gerd or acid reflux causing this. I used to however get really sore bad throats with the gerd and I haven't had that this time. I have however had a dodgy stomach recently, a bit of a nervous jittery stomach I would say.
Erika, I am on Erythromycin for a week. I previously had doxycycline a couple of times. I also have nasonex a nasal spray, which I have had before but it didn't work for long previously. Giving it another try though. What have they given you?
Hey Schao, sorry to hear you are still dizzy. Im much better in that respect, although I still have problems driving. I have been seeing a balance therapist since last October and it seems to have really made a difference. I don't feel so dizzy in day to day life and can do much more without the dizzyness bothering me. So sorry to hear that you haven't improved. Are you having any treatment or anything to help at the moment? The sinuses are a real pain. It seems I have get so much better from the dizzyness but then this is just interfering with the rest of my recovery. Im sure after 2 surgeries you definately know what I mean. Hope you get some relief soon.
Hi. I feel your pain. I to suffered with sinus problems, for years!!! Feeling tired and aweful was so depressing. I to tried every antibiotic under the sun. You may want to try nasal irregation. Go on the web and buy yourself a nette pot. I know it sounds crazy but irregating your nasal passages may give you some relief. Also you can buy a steam vaporizer, the kind you put your face into. After years of suffering I finally went for the sugery. It was the best thing I could have ever done. I took me a long time to go and do it, but this past January it has been a year, and I haven't has one infection since. Take care and I hope my info helps. JoAnne
I get sinus problems as well..some are allergies...but, try a nasal spray...sure it tastes terrible as it goes down the back of your throat..and yeah, I dislike using it..but, it helps for the really awful headaches!!
Just ask your doc' on what you can take...but, it does help..alot..because I get heavy headaches...and the headaches start to go away miraculously with the nasal spray!!
also a humidifier would be another good thing or steam!!!
Hey thanks for the comments. Thats really useful. Its so hard to know whats right or wrong to try. I am giving up with the erythromycin antibiotics, they are making me feel so awful and weak and I am not sleeping at all with them. I feel so dry and stuffy in my nose now. My cheeks and nose don't hurt like they did so maybe the infection is now gone and I just need to irrigate to loosen up the crud. I am now on a nasal spray - nasonex. I have tried flixonase in the past but find it irritates. I think its helping to get rid of some of the excess pnd. I will do the steaming too as you suggest.
