Do I have a sinus infection? thick yellow snot?

hey,

Well,I had a cold for about 4 days last week. It started last sunday with a sore throat and lasted til about wednesday of last week. However, for the last 5 days I have been very congested and have had thick yellow snot. Is it normal for a cold to hang on like this for up to a week after the main cold is gone? I have had daily sinus and allergy trouble for the last 2 years or so. I dont have thick yellow snot every day though, except for the last 5 days of course. I'm just wondering if its a sinus infection or if its just my cold hanging on. I do know that it isnt normal for me to have very thick yellow snot every day like ive had for last week.

thanks

Re: Do I have a sinus infection? thick yellow snot?

Colds are caused by viruses and produce clear mucus. If it's yellow, 9 times out of ten there's a bacterial infection at work.

Whether you want to have it treated with antibiotics is a matter of choice. Because I've disliked doctors most of my life, I always treated mine at home by gargling and rinsing my nose out with salt water until the infection gave up. The problem with DIY'ing it is that the infection can still smolder for a long time after without causing overt symptoms. That means it can recur at a later date. Those smoldering infections can do damage to the lining of the nose, causing polyps to form.

So... You may be better off in the short term - and long - by getting yourself to doc pronto.

You asked for advice here about whether you have a sinus infection. I agree with the poster who answered; you probably have a sinus infection.
