It might be worth remembering that mkgbrook's case is a little unusual as he/she had a whole bunch of things done at the same time. I'd say its not normally like this for most who require surgery.
I had Endoscopic Sinus Surgery last week and it the most painful part was removing the plaster from my skin where they injected to put me asleepbefore the op. Seriously I'm not kidding. The packing in my nose came out painlessly the day after the op, and I only had a few specs of blood for an hour or so afterwards. Not a single nosebleed.
I'm the most squeamish person alive and can safely say that surgery itself is nothing to fear these days.
