Sinus Infection, Swollen Lymph Nodes, Bronchitis and more all at one!

I am a 24 year old male who for the past month and a half has been dealing with upper respiratory issues and infections. In order to help everyone here I am listing an extensive history for you.

10/30/2009 - Got a cold and began to cough up discolored mucus. Was prescribed a Z Pack.

11/24/2009 - Nasal Air passage seems blocked and hard to breath through. No mucus, just dry. Prescribed FloNase ( which I have used for years.)

11/24/2009 - 1/15/2010 Continued blockage of Nasal Passage, Flonase seemed to help slightly. I very rarely smoke and during this period of time I smoke 2 packs and was under stress at work and up late.

1/25/2010 - Began to have mucus buildup ( runny nose, white, cloudy and turned thick) and cold like symptoms came back. Severe pain/pressure in sinus also started. GP gave a shot of PREDNISONE and prescribed 21 tablets of MethylPREDNISOLONE 4mg if the symptoms did not go away after the shot. 1st day after the shot was fine, next daw symptoms were back so I took the tablets.

2/10/2010 Began to cough, chest rattle, and coughing up discolored yellow mucus from lungs. Nasal mucus turned yellow a few days prior. I have a history of bronchitits episodes from previous years, so I was prescribed Amoxicillan 500mg for a week.

2/17/2010 - A day before the last dose of Amoxicilla, I woke up with swollen tonsils and uvula with white spots. Went to the doctor the same day and he prescribed AUGMENTEN. Still had bronchitis symptoms.

2/23/2010 - Bronchitis symptoms worsened and mucus returned. Doctor from large medical group prescribed a Z PACK. This doctor by chance was a pulmonologist and I informed him of my medical history. He did an chest X-Ray and thought there was a lung abnormality in the lower regions of the lungs. Later after consulting the radiologist they stated that it was old secretions.

3/7/2010 - Strep throat symptoms ( white tonsils ) appeared again and another doctor took a throat culture. Came back negative for strep throat. Prescribed a sore throat syrup and nasal saline spray. Appointment was booked to see the head, neck, and throat.

3/11/2010 - Say the doctor of head, neck, and throat surgery and endoscopy was performed on nasal passages. Nothing unusual was found. Throat was examined as well as lymph nodes. A complete list of medications and medical history was given to doctor. Doctor was very sure of herself in stating that it was tonsillitis with an underlying sinusitis. I preferred not going on antibiotics, but she insisted that I be put on CIPROFLXACIN 500mg for 3 weeks AND CLINDAMYCIN 300mg for 3 weeks. Both twice a day. Also given a larger saline flush and said a "Neti Pot" might help.

3/12/2010 - The night before I was work out after having a rough day at work and going to the ENT specialist. Began coughing the night before and this morning coughing up yellowish mucus. When I woke up I blew out yellow nasal mucus. Now its the afternoon and mucus is foggy white. Still have an unwell feeling.

For YEARS I have suffered with hay fever, and for the past few years bronchitis. I RARELY smoke and with this issues I have stopped permanently. I am also taking PROBIOTICS and my diets is rather healthy. I have missed weeks of work.

I have been tested for Mono, Aids, Hiv, STDs, Strep, Epstein Barr, and ALL are negative.

Any good theories????

Re: Sinus Infection, Swollen Lymph Nodes, Bronchitis and more all at one!

DAllen-

I just had surgery on Monday for sinuses. I have to say, your case looks a lot like mine - and mine started at about your age. After a ramping up of all my symptoms recently - and a very similar progression (repeated bronchitis, constant infection-like feeling, a diagnosis of small airways disease in my lungs, etc), I finally found a doctor who referred me to an ENT instead of just sticking a light up my nose and telling me that everything looked fine. The ENT did an endoscopy and a CT scan of my sinuses. The scan showed a lot of blockage in most of my sinus cavities, the endoscope showed some maxillary sinus blockage with a bit of pus (from infection). Based on the CT scan, we decided to go ahead with sinus surgery and a small septoplasty (to make the nasal passages fully clear).

Regarding your history: The ENT's insistence on a longer-term antibiotic, is apparently a common practice to try to kill off any 'super bugs' that might be lingering in the sinuses. It is a less-invasive way to try and apparently quite often successful. The surgery is viewed as a last resort, as it can be a painful process for recovering and is a full surgery (with risks of anesthesia, etc.). If the antibiotics don't work, then I would request a CT scan to see if there are any other issues that can not be easily seen.

Keep in mind that I am just someone who went through a lot of issues before finally getting to this point. I am just at the beginning of my recovery, and don't know the final outcome for me. But, you are definitely not the only one going through the seemingly un-related issues you wrote about.

Best of luck.
