Felt SO GOOD on Prednisone.....

I had surgery about 10 years ago and now symptoms are back. Starts off with no sense of smell......fullness in the face, drainage all the usual stuff. Had a Cat Scan and it showed all the sinuses blocked and thickening of the Mucus. I started to have wheezing and both my ENT and pulmo doctor recommended a course of Prednisone. I never felt better !! All smell came back, no discharge, tons of energy but once off the steroids all the miserable symptoms returned. My ENT is a little evasive about surgery although recommended it initially.......Anyone else experienced this roller coaster? It seems as if the Prednisone showed me what life could be like....

Re: Felt SO GOOD on Prednisone.....

It's pretty common to feel good on Prednisone - it's very effective at reducing the inflammation that causes sinusitis (and which can inhibit your sense of smell).

The key to getting your sinus issues under control for the long-term is figuring out what's causing the inflammation. Usually allergies are the culprit so getting allergy testing is the first think you might consider trying if you haven't done that already. You might also ask your doctors about Singulair (if you're not already on it) - it helps inhibit the inflammatory process that is present in both asthma and sinusitis.

If you've had surgery before and the symptoms returned it's unlikely that surgery will help until you figure out what's causing the inflammation.

Re: Felt SO GOOD on Prednisone.....

Thanks a bunch for posting I am on Advair for Asthma although I am convinced that the Sinus drainage caused my asthma. My pulminologist said I will have Asthma until my sinus issues are resolved...
After my last Asthma flare I had allergy resting and nothing showed up. On my last CT scan the doctor said all the sinuses were involved then I had the prednisone and that well documented euphoria!! The lack of the sense of smell was what triggered my first surgery.....all was well until a year or so ago......then the smell went away again. I don't quite understand how the mucus membrane gets thickened however.......

Sinus drainage definitely doesn't cause asthma but the two are related - both are inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract and it's very common that people who have sinusitis have asthma as well because when the sinuses get inflamed the lungs generally do as well.

The mucus membranes get thicker because something irritates them and your immune system reacts by releasing chemicals - which cause inflammation - as a defensive mechanism (the same way that people who are extremely allergic to something will literally swell up if they ingest whatever they are allergic to).

Do they have you on inhaled steroids for the asthma and sinus inflammation? Inhaled steroids combined with Singulair can do a pretty good job of keeping the inflammation at bay (though you may still need occasional courses of oral prednisone).

Re: Felt SO GOOD on Prednisone.....

Thanks so much....what a detailed explanation of the inflammation.Better than any doctor has explained it to me. I am on Advair which is an inhaled cortisone and albuterol mixed I think. It works well for the asthma.I should not complain I guess..... My main symptoms are much nose blowing at night.....I have found that Loratadine (Claritin) helps there.I should take that daily. That baffles me too..had allergy testing and found nothing! The anosmia is very depressing however...when I was on the Pred. I walked around smelling everything for 2 weeks, now nothing Maybe getting my sense of smell back is not enough of a reason to get surgery again. I have no polyps now, or other abnomalities My ENT said (before the Prednisone) "I think your sense of smell is history" pretty sad..then on the Pred it was back. Anyway what a great forum.....

Have you ever tried a steroid nasal spray? It works very well for me, and they are considered very safe, even for long-term use.
