For the past two months, I've been having ear problems. I went to my doctor and he gave me ear drops and antibiotics for the infection. Even after a month later, I was still having problems with my ears. They feels like I have thick mucus in them. I went back to my doctor and he said that my ears looks a lot better, but gave me a second round of antibiotics. He ordered me to get a CT and referred me to see an ENT.
Today, I went to the ENT and he looked in my ears and said that they looked normal.
He then went over my CT results and they found clouding of left chamber of the Sphenoid sinus as well as the posterior 2/3 of the left ethmoid air cells consistent with sinusitis.
I don't have the common symptoms on having a sinus infection.
No sore throat, my nose is not running, no congestion, no bad headaches.
I sometimes blow out yellow mucus and my sense of smell is off and minor headaches from time to time.
My ear is a different story. I have fullness and drainage in the back of my throat. My ears pop and crackle all the time.
The ENT ended up referring me to another specialist due to my Cerebral Palsy. Most likely, they have to put me under for any treatment.
Has anyone experience similar problems with their ears due to Sphenoid sinus?
I'm not sure if I have Sphenoid sinus, but I do experience periods of what I can only say sounds like I'm talking through a tunnel. My ear (left only) will start to feel weird usually in the morning, and within an hour, when I talk it feels like I'm in a tunnel. Those I'm talking to don't say I sound funny, so it's got to be just in my head. Several years ago I went to a couple of ENTs that did all sorts of hearing tests on me, put a probe up my nose, etc., etc. They found nothing concrete that they could use as a diagnosis. My regular doc said try taking Sudafed every morning. That does seem to help after awhile, but I really hate using any sort of OTC meds every day. He said he thinks I have fluid in my ear canal and that is what is causing the problem. I do use a nedi pot every couple of days (I heard it's not good to use those every day), and that helps to clear the sinuses a bit, but it doesn't keep this condition at bay. It is worse in the warmer/moister weather. For example, I went to FL for a month, and after two days being there, the problem started again. I live in the NE, and it is always alot worse during the summer months. What exactly is Sphenoid sinus???
I had a ct scan a few days ago which dx a left sphenoid sinus infection. I am now on another round of oral antibiotics. I am also on a short burst prednisone and am waiting for my nasal nebulizer and two nebulizer antibiotics and a nebulizer steroid to arrive.
I get an intermittent pressure in the ear/clogged ear feeling, a headache behind the eyes and intermittent pressure in my upper molars. From what I read, the sphenoid sinus is hard to treat and has to be treated as it could potentially lead to meningitis or an infection to the optic nerve. My doctor is trying the nasal nebulizer to supplement the oral antibiotics because the sphenoid sinus has limited blood flow and oral antibiotics don't reach the infection very well. The prednisne is to reduce inflamation so that the nebulizer meds could hopefully reach the sphenoid sinus and knock the infection out. I will see the ent again in two weeks.
It's been over an year since I had sinus problems. All is good. After I went to another ENT shortly after my first post of last year, he gave me Singulair for my sinus and a round of Prednisone for my ears. The doctor assumed that I had some kind of viral infection that never cleared up. My ear started to feel better, I still have problems with my ears, but nothing like last year. During Thanksgiving, I started to have problem with my ear again. I went to my PCP and he said that I had another ear infection, He gave me ear drops and that didn't work. Before Christmas, I went back to get my ear check and my doctor said that the infection still not gone yet. He gave me different drops and my New Year's, my ear was a lot better. I now wear earplugs each time I take a shower or swim. They are helping a lot.
