I don't know what's going on but my maxillary sinuses feel like about to explode!! My nose burns and is dry/ bleeding when I blow my nose in the morning. I also have soreness around eyes and in upper cheeks. The pain radiates so much it feels like my mouth hurts and I have a headache something I rarely get. It's been worse since the cold weather started, feels like I'm breathing acid. I have no congestion ?? No runny nose and no sore throat or post nasal drip at all. Ears hurt slightly , also no fever at all . I have severe pollen, dust mite allergies.I suffered all summer but not like this, I had a bad post nasal drip during summer and swollen face, sore throat but all that went away. Now it's cool out and everything is worse, like my sinuses are somehow super dry but why all this??? I use a neti pot and am taking Claritin but little to no effect is happening.
Hi,
Two things have helped me when I have suffered with my Sinuses.
SUDAFED in liquid or tablet form was recomended by a ENT Specialist, you can take Paracetamol at the same time.
Also Accupunture helped a lot.
Wishing you well,
But do you girls get really bad pain? And migraines or bad headaches from dry sinuses?? Seems an extreme reaction for the body to do because its dry?? Or an I a rare case? I would have expected a runny nose snd itchy eyes and I have none of that
I also just too a super hot shower and kept my head under the water and somehow I feel better?? I'm lost? Shouldn't all the added blood pressure from the heat make it worse?
I get terrible facial pain and headaches when my sinus's are acting up. And sometimes they are super dry - no drainage, etc - just all the pain and a clogged feeling.
I thought a Nasal Rinse was going to be the answer - went about 3 weeks feeling great - but today the pain is back worse than ever.
Even the back of my head and neck will hurt - hot/steamy showers definitely help!
I have had the same thing for 6 months..constant pain, but no fluids coming from my sinus. But second CT scan showed an infection.
I think sometimes there can be a deeply embedded infection which causes pain, but not the expected mucus production (which is what doctors expect). I've been doing saline washes without any success...finally given in to trying a different antibiotic along with peroxide solution flushing..and strangely enough, I am rinsing out infected coloured gunk that I think normal saline rinse just doesn't get to.
Also my ENT specialist said to stop the decongestant tablets/sprays as they just dry you up even more and cause rebound effects.
So you had an infection but with varying symptoms? Like one day you were alright but the next super pain ? Hmmmm if that's the case maybe I to have a locked in bacteria?? I don't understand why but somedays I feel almost normal and others like death is soon.?!? When I blow my nose after a nasal rinse I don't see weird colored mucus I just feel like water is trapped in my ears?? And I don't have a fever either , I'm tired of all this crap! Summer I was always suffering but never to this point?!! Diesnt make sense to me
No, I had constant pain every day for six months, just no discharge at all. Was only when I started using the peroxide flush that I think I unblocked the tubes to get the yuck out of my ethmoid/fontal sinus. Then the infection got worse while on Doxycycline. I continued with peroxide flooding, and then tonnes of yellow/green gunk with blot clots started coming out, like a dam had been knocked down. Started Keflex antibiotics on Monday evening and continuing with a rotation of peroxide flushing and saline/bicarb flushing...it seems the peroxide does get more out. I'm starting to feel much lest blocked and congested at last.
I am convinced I had a trapped infection, and only the peroxide could reach it, but I also needed the right antibiotic. Our GPs in the UK don't do cultures, just give amoxacillin first then Doxyxycline if Amoxicillin don't work...which my infection appears to be resistant to.
I also didn't have a fever...but a definite infection. All bodies respond differently.
Thank you for answering I appreciate it.Right now I feel I'm alone trying to figure out and fight this.My doctor just gave me nasonex spray which is useless. My tmj dentist made me a splint but never scanned me once to see if I had mechanical damage( he just said I didn't cuz I don't have lock jaw or noise). My allergy doctor said it could be my high dust mite allergy except that I don't get watery itchy eyes, runny nose or trouble breathing at all??? My symptoms are pretty much maxillary sinus pressure to a point where my upper teeth hurt, sometimes I get below ears Eustachian tube swelling which seems less if a problem.i also get the normal eye and forehead pressure from sinuses but its more pain than pressure.if it wasn't for the headaches it be manageable.Ohh and the ENT prescribed singular and steroid spray which neither work.I also use a neti pot.The ENT didn't bother scanning me either, just said its allergies and sent me off. So in Canada although the healthcare is free its also useless and takes forever to get appointments.Right now I don't know still if I have allergies, tmj or a sinus infection ,deviated septum etc .i just want my life back for gods sake I'm only 36 and things seem to be getting worse ?!?

The British NHS is like that...takes ages to get an appointment. I had a CT scan of my sinuses which apparently showed nothing, though I believe I was infected then in August. But second CT scan (31st October) showed infection, but results went back to my GP, who didn't mention antibiotics at the time.
I have always been allergic to dust/dustmites/pollen/cats/feathers/mould spores etc but it always went to my lungs before and I had asthma till about 12 years ago. I take antihistamines daily and now on Fexofenadine. I don't think allergies caused my sinusitis as I have no carpets, anti-dust mites mattress covers, duvet covers and pillow cases. Also a Filtrete air purifier which has the highest CADAR rating I can find. I hardly go outside anymore! I think mine started from a virus ( I work with kids and have 2 myself, so pick up bugs easily).
I would suggest asking for a CT scan. Although mine showed a deviated septum and a choncha bullosa, I don't think this causes the infection, just reduces drainage...especial if sinus membranes are inflamed.
Peroxide flushing isn't nice, but I'm sure it is helping reduce inflammation. The nielmed rinse probably helps, but I don't think it kills enough bacteria.
For the pain, I couldn't tolerate opiates, and they didn't help the pain anyway, so I'm now on amitriptyline, which was taking most of the pain away until the sinus infection got worse. My headache is now just starting, after 8 hours of no pain!
Also Flixonase Nose drops are supposedly better than Nasonex. It is a stronger dosage than Nasonex, though I'm not sure that the steroids are any better at reducing the inflammation than just rinsing with Nielmed saline/bicarbonate. Also, I rinse my sinuses laying on my back with head hanging over edge of bed for 2 mins, turning head to side (1 min each side) then roll on to front (head hanging over bed) for 2 mins, then turn head to side (1 min each side) and I'm sure this gets the solution into the smaller ethmoid and frontal sinuses, which I don't think a neti pot rinse would do.
And I'm only 41, as was really active until this started...use to go horse riding twice a week but now I daren't ride. So I now how bad it is!

I have dust mite allergy but i am starting to wonder whether I may have developed an allergy to dairy and/or gluten. However in the UK it is difficult to get allergy testing done. I had a skin "stab" test done when i was a kid, and that showed allergy to cats, dust, house dust mite, feather, pollen and fungal spores. However I don't know if I was checked for food allergies, but probably was. I know that allergies can change over time, as I became allergic to my mum's dog, and also allergic to horses saliva ( come up in a bad red rash when one dribbled on me!). I am going to discuss food allergies with my ENT specialist on the 31st December when my next appointment is. I am trying dairy/gluten free products at the moment, but haven't eliminated them completely yet.

Reason: edited because the forum didn't like the word I put in lol
Might I suggest the blood test, I did both the scratch and blood. The results from the blood are much more accurate.i have severe dust mites, pollen, soya, peanuts, hazzlenut.i think we have similar symptoms and I'm just trying to figure out what is my true trigger.I thought I had tmj but I seem to doubt this sometimes because of my symptoms which don't even start at my jaw.The are similar to yours in many ways .I have burning in my nose, then my maxillary sinuses hurt, then eye balls ,forehead, and below my ears sometimes and back of neck. Then headaches . I also get blood in saliva after I get up only and dry mouth especially in bed which leads me to believe at least that's dust mite related.i had a good break from oct-nov but it seems now that the cold weather is back and I go in and out of the house my sinuses flare up.I can't seem to understand anything anymore! I'm scheduled in on the 21st dec at ENT and ill demand a scan
I doubt my GP or ENT specialist will refer me for blood allergy testing. In the UK, they don't like doing cultures to identify the correct antibiotic. I have now had Amoxicillin, Doxycyxline, Keflex (none worked) and am now on Clarithromycin. My GP is reluctant you use the newer antibiotics as they are reserved for hospitals and MRSA etc. (as if my infection isn't resistant to antibiotics!)
My doctor has signed me off work for another 6 weeks, as he thinks I will need surgery/endoscopy.
I can't see how endoscopy can get rid of the infection...I'm sure only the right antibiotic ill do that.
Why on earth would you need an Endoscopy for Sinus Infection.
Has it occured to you that you might have Candida especially as you have had so many different Antibiotics.
Look up Candida and you will be suprised at the number of symptoms it can cause. Your stomach must be feeling the effects of these Antibiotics so dont forget to take Probiotics daily to replace good bacteria lost along with the bad while you are on Antibiotics.
I wish you well,
Yes, I have considered candida/fungal infection but both GP and ENT specialist have dismissed it, but I will raise it again when I next see my ENT specialist. I have looked up the candida diet, and will follow that from now on, and I have also got a load of pro-biotic capsules with 10 billion cultures ( 10 different strains of Lactobacillus and Bifodobacterium). The clarithromycin has really knocked my digestive system hard (the stomach pain woke me up in the middle of the night).
To be honest, I don't think my GP has a clue, and I have no faith in the ENT specialist, and I can't afford to go private.
Hi,
Clarithromycin had a terrible effect on my stomach. I was prescribed it along with Amoxillan for H.Pylori. It wrecked my stomach for almost a year and it wasn't till many months after I finished the Antibiotics that I learned about the benefits of Probiotics. I hope you find an answer to your Sinus problem and I wish you all the best, continue with the Probiotics and I dont know why but Drs seem to shut shop when one mentions Candida, I've yet to meet one who is willing to talk about it.
Well, I'm on day 3 of clarithromycin, and feel a tiny bit better (keeping my fingers crossed that it is starting to kill the infection). My stomach also seems much better today, so I'm hoping taking pro-biotics will prevent any long term effects.
I think many doctors don't know much about systemic candida infection, so they don't like to go down that route. It's very frustrating trying to get to the bottom of long term sinus infection and to eliminate the cause. I bet my ENT specialist won't even consider the possibility of food allergy testing.
Sinus issues are so common as the ENT area is so sensitive and represents such a delicate equilibrium. For many, their homes represent a constant assault on their senses so investing in hypoallergenic products may be your best bet. The best latex mattress will apparently be quite sensitive to you, and buying a higher grade of fabric conditioner and covers etc will present a less abrasive environment for you to leave in
