Unhappy Newbie--Possible Sinusitis; doctor won't help...

New to this website; just trying to figure some things out.
My family physician (whom I have had seen since 2007); has seen me periodically for sinus infections (sinusitis). Through the past 6 years or so; he has prescribed me Flonase (Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray)--50 mcg; having me do "2 puffs per nostril" daily until Sinus infection subsided; also telling me to buy OTC; Zyrtec; in which I did. It seemed to work well.
As of 2012... I have been to see my family dr. in the spring; due to the sinusitis (sinus infection) came back; same protocol; Flonase and Zyrtec. It actually did NOT work like previous years; so I went back and he decided to try Zithromax (Z-Pack); with the Flonase and Zyrtec (otc). It subsided (but I think on its own); but in the fall of 2012(September); I went back for a sinus problem again; they seem to never go away; he used Flonase and Afrin (decongestant-otc); same protocol.
Any rate; he said, " it was to get me through the fall season"... honestly I went back to see him 2 or 3 times within the fall season--same problem; at one point I went to the ER b/c a headache (more like migraine) set in.

Now, I just seen him again; Dec.3; sinus problem persists; he says now; yep; its chronic sinusitis.
Let's get u a CT scan on the sinuses; which I did. Go back to see him... says no blockages, no masses; so NO surgery. So I said well the symptoms (congestion, inflammation, slight headache in the front of the forehead, drainage in the throat-to stomach) are still there; just as bad as before; can't get hardly breath (through my nose) b/c its plugged; then all of a sudden it drains...with the Flonase (which is a steroid) and the Afrin (decongestant); it is not helping it one bit....so what should I do??
He told me; just con't using the Flonase and Afrin daily...recheck in 3 months (March 2013).

The current stuff I am using is not working...he seems to not be listening when I said that...he even said my nasal cavities are inflamed and plugged; now why can't he do something different or something?? I literally cannot even function with daily actives b/c i have to always blow my nose to "try" to break the congestion up; but with NO success, when it drains (from nasal to throat region); makes my stomach upset (nausea).

Today (12/20/2012); I am going back to the dr.'s office again; this time to see the other doctor working there; hopefully she will listen more....but, what should I do?
Any home remedies work?
Anything?
I tried getting my doctor to work with me on this problem, but unfortunately, he isn't going to it seems like.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Re: Newbie--Possible Sinusitis; doctor won't help...

Hopefully the different doctor you saw yesterday referred you to an ENT specialist.

Firstly, I would avoid the Afrin. Oxymetazonline and xylometazoline sprays are known to have rebound congestion effects...i.e. if you take them for more than 7-10 days then when you stop you get more congested and the congestion comes back even quicker. You can get into a vicious cycle of using more and more spray to temporarily relieve congestion.

An alternative is using saline/bicarbonate flushing. I know many in USA use a "neti pot" to rinse nasal passages, but I'm unsure if that reaches sinuses, so I do Sinus flooding (laying on back with head hanging over side for a few minutes, then flip over to front and hang head forward over bed for few minutes) drain into bowl and gently blow. Then repeat approx 45 minutes later. This helps to clear out mucus in sinuses, reduce inflammation and clear blocked ducts/tubes.

Also look at peroxide flooding...I have been doing this for a month, and am convinced it unblocked my tubes to the back sinus chambers and released infected mucus (which saline flushing hadn't). peroxide flooding is painful to start with until the sinus/nasal linings are healed.

At the same time, I believe long term sinus infections need long term antibiotics to totally clear infection ( many doctors just prescribe 7-10 days worth wich may not be long enough) and also the "right" antibiotic needs to be used. I went through 3 different ones before getting one that started to clear my infection. Now on 5th one and my infection still hasn't gone completely.

Hope this helps.

Re: Newbie--Possible Sinusitis; doctor won't help...

Hi,

Sinusitis and sinus infection are different. For an infection you will need the correct antibiotic (my ENT and allergist both prescribe Levaquin) taken for 21-30 days. It sounds like you need to go to an allergist or an ENT and if either prescribe for less than 21 days, find a new doctor. For sinusitis, you'll need ongoing care by either an allergist or ENT.

I would forget the Neti pot since it only gets to the lower sinuses if that, and get a Grossan Nasal Irrigator. It looks like a water pik and you can get them in most drug stores or buy it online. Best $100 you'll ever spend and they last forever. You can irrigate 3-4 times a day with a saline solution: 1 cup non-iodine salt and 1/4 cup baking soda mixed together. Use warm water.

If you dont have an infection then try SUDAFED, recomended to me by the ENT Dr.
Used daily (Safe for as long as needed) it really does help but must be given a period of time to see benefit.
If infected Sinuses then a course of Antibiotics fist of all.
All the best,

Solofelix.

Re: Newbie--Possible Sinusitis; doctor won't help...

Thanks for the information. I will have to check into it and see what I can do!
She did refer me to the ENT doctor. I go in about a month.
She said stop the Afrin and Flonase as well...she put me on Prednisone 10 mg (take 2 daily for the first 5 days, then 1 daily for the next 5 days); 15 pills in the bottle.
