My first suggestion is that you call your doctor and find out his professional opinion. Please don't worry about bothering him....that's his job!
Until then, put a pillow under your son's mattress so that his head is up a bit more and he's not laying so flat. That may help some. A humidifier in his room may also help. Is he making a funny noise when he can't breathe? He may have croup. Take him immediately into the bathroom where you are running the shower as hot as it can go. Just sit in the bathroom with him and let the warm air get into his lungs. A doctor should see him.
