sphenoid sinus infection

Has anyone had a sphenoid sinus infection successfully treated with only meds and not needed surgery?

Not yet, but then even my ENT specialists can't agree on whether it is a sphenoid infection or not, my lead consultant ENT has agreed to go a head with surgery to open up passgae ways, open concha bullosa and correct deviated septum "to see if it works" and will clean out whatever is in there and possibly culture if he finds anything!

So far I have had 5 different antibiotics, pseudoephedrine, diclifenec anti-inflammatories, several types of antihistamines, flixonase steroid nose drops and gone through countless painkillers which have not really worked on reducing pain in my cheeckbones, eyebrows, in between the eyes and occasionally going up to my ears.

I've also been doing regular saline flushing.

Even I'm not convinced it is just a sphenoid infection now, even though 4 GPs and doctor who looked at last CT scan said it was sphenoid infection! I think it is possibly a combination of sphenoid infection and possible TMJ disorder...but I'm not a doctor so can't be sure yet!

Question Re: sphenoid sinus infection

I am to have this surgery on Friday. I did have a CT scan which showed my right sphenoid sinus was completly closed. I was told that it has pus/infection inside that needs to drain and then perhaps I will stop having horrilbe infections such as MRSA. They also did a Brain Lab Computerized Lab CT scan so the doctor will be using "the robot arms" to be able to carefully move to the correct area during the surgery.

We shall see. I will be back in touch to let you know how it goes!

Re: sphenoid sinus infection

I am now on Levaquin- my third antibiotic and feeling crummy. Now my mucouse is yellow again. Not a good sign. I still have one more week of prednsone, a few days of antibiotic and the nasal irrigation with two different antibiotics and a steroid in addition to an oral decongestant I am taking. I am scheduled to see the ent again in a week and then repeat the ct scan. The way I am feeling now, I may see her sooner than the week. I can't believe that I have been sick since November

Re: sphenoid sinus infection

So...I did have the surgery on Friday and it went PERFECT! By the time I got home I was able to feel like my head and lungs were clear for the first time in a very long time.

I was given an antibotic in my IV during the surgery from what I understand and came home with only the sinus rinse. I did have a prescription to fill if needed for pain but I have have had NONE! No headache at all. No fever and very little bleeding.

I will return to my ENT for postop on Friday to see what he saw or says after the surgery. WOW...I have had 4 sinus surgeries too and this was the easiet one. BUT I will say that I was the most afraid of this one "being close to my brain".

Will return to work this afternoon and continue to take it easy in the meantime.

Best wishes to you as you make decisions on your health~

I'm pleased your surgery went so well. I'm still not convinced my pain is from my sinus...I've continued with saline flushing once a day and still getting discoloured mucus, but don't feel "infected" anymore...just in pain. Now swapped from amitriptyline to gabapentin & so far my pain is nowhere near as bad as it was. I'm still going ahead with surgery...but still haven't been sent a date
