Question chronic sinusitis, no stuffy nose -operation??

Hello, I just discovered this great forum! My problems began last February. I had a bad sore throat so I went to my GP who prescribed anti-biotics. The sore throat went and returned. I was prescribed 4 different anti-biotics during a period of 9 months, but the sore throat never went away properly. After a holiday where I was exposed to different temperatures and air conditioning, then a 12 hour flight, I was so ill with a chronic cough, sore throat, thick head, temperature symptoms, I finally went to an ENT specialist. He sent me for a CT scan, said my sinuses were chronically infected and blocked and that he would operate me asap..as I didn't know anything about this problem, I decided to get a 2nd opinion. The 2nd specialist prescribed some nose drops containing cortisone + other ingredients, steroids maybe?? (I think). I have been using these for 3 weeks and have to go back on Wednesday.I don't feel they have worked, so I assume he will want to do the op.. I have also been rinsing with salt and using an infra-red lamp + inhaling.Everyone advises me AGAINST an operation, as they say it doesn't help, or the symptoms recur. My question is:
I have pressure on the sinuses, PND and a permanent sore throat, but NO blocked nose or bad headaches - has anyone else had this and what did he or she do? Is there any effective treatment which works without an operation?- is there anyone out there with positive results from an operation?? I'd really appreciate some advice, thanks.

Re: chronic sinusitis, no stuffy nose -operation??

I had similar problems and had a sinus operation. It did help quite a bit, but if the sinus issues are caused by allergies underlying the infections, the allergies can still cause problems. If you have the surgery, you will see if you have any symptoms left after you heal. I never had headaches either, but I was miserable with the pressure, PND and sore throats. The only antibiotic that works for me now is Levaquin. If you haven't had cultures done of the drainage, it is worth doing, to make sure the antibiotics have been appropriate ones for the organisms. I had pseudomonas in my sinuses, and I think it was caused by frequent hot tub use for my arthritis. You might want to give the culture/antibiotic treatment one last chance, but the operations do help many people, in case that is needed.

Re: chronic sinusitis, no stuffy nose -operation??

Thanks very much for the quick reply. I forgot to say I was given 2 more anti-biotics, 1 on holiday and 1 by the first ENT doctor, so 6 all together, but ALL pre-CT, so none of them were prescribed for the sinuses . The nose drops were developed by the 2nd doctor so I can't quote a name, as they are not generally on sale. Good idea about taking a culture, which no-one has done. The CT scan showed all but one of the sinuses are chronically infected and full, which is why the first doc said there was no other option but surgery, and presumably felt a culture wasn't necessary. I should add I am a senior and have never had sinus problems before. On Wednesday the 2nd doc will do an ultrasound to see if the drops have reduced the infection..!
