Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

I was recently diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome. Is anyone on this board able to wear contact lenses at all? I'm having a lot of trouble due to the dryness and have been wearing glasses most of the time.

I'm considering getting punctal plugs. I'm desperate. Anyone have punctal plugs, and if so, are you able to wear contacts or is the dryness still so bad you can't wear them?

Thanks.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

I don’t want to discourage you, but most of the folks I’ve met (including myself) had to give up contacts with Sjogren’s.

I did the plug routine and restasis, but I could only handle them for a few hours.

I was warned by my ophthalmologist that it can be dangerous to wear contacts with severely dry eyes.

I would try the plugs. These help some to a great extent and along with restasis you may be able to pull it off, but let your ophthalmologist give you the yea or nay. Your eyesight is too precious, yes?

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

I was able to wear my contacts not too long ago, but the dryness seems to have gotten worse pretty quickly. My eye doctor claims people with dry eyes can get Lasik, but I've read otherwise. My vision is already worse from the dryness, even with glasses, so the additional dryness from Lasik would be bad. I'm planning to get the plugs at some point in the near future. Then Restasis, possibly. Thanks for your help!

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

I have Sjogrens but am able to wear contact lenses up to 12-14 hours every day. However, I was told by two doctors that I cannot have laser surgery because of it, so I'm fortunate with the lenses. I found a good opthalmologist who made me try all sorts of brands of lenses - more water, less water; more oxygen, less oxygen - and we found the right kind and brand. I wear them for 30 days and then put in a new pair, etc. I can't wear color-tinted lenses; they have to be clear. Check around perhaps for a new doc. Get recommendations from friends or other doctors. Good luck and I hope you find lenses you can wear.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

It's good that you can wear your contacts without trouble. Just last month I wore mine 11 hours/day with some dryness, but not too bad. I got a tiny, tiny cyst on my eye that I felt when my lenses were in, even though it was off to the side in the white area. I stopped wearing my contacts then, saw my eye doctor and used Lotemax drops for awhile. That was due to irritation. Apparently the cyst should go away on its own. My eye doctor didn't think the cyst was related to dryness, but my insticts tell me it's related.

Either the dryness has suddenly gotten worse or my eyes aren't adjusted to contacts anymore, but it's gotten so bad they're getting stuck to my eyes, which is scary, so I've stopped wearing them. I plan to get punctal plugs, but they're expensive and I want to test out wearing contacts a bit more first. I lasted 4 hours over the weekend, but was scared to keep them in any longer and checked them every hour, taking them out and rinsing with solution, trying to be careful.

I'm assuming you take your contacts out at night. I used to wear contacts I took out at night that I changed every 2 weeks. With the dryness and Sjogren's diagnosis, I changed to daily contacts that are apparently the moistest they make. My eye doctor said there isn't anything better, but maybe I should find a new doctor. My dryness may be a lot worse than yours though. My doctor seems to brush the dryness off saying lots of people have dry eyes and didn't explain a thing about Sjogren's when I told her I had it. She just said my eyes are REALLY dry then. Time for a second opinion.

Thanks for your reply!

I DON'T HAVE SJOGREN'S nor do I really know about it
BUT.....I am reading a book (non fiction) called HOSPITAL by Julie Salamon.
I know the book is true because the hospital I spent decades working in is
in the book...anyway, on Page 173 a simple solution that sadly does not
get the publicity it deserves: Dr. Perry Rosenthal, cornea specialist from Harvard Medical School dev a special lens called Boston scleral lens....amazing..a doctor who couldn't read a book for two years sees clearly. I urge you to go to the library and read this on page 173

Cool Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

Hi there Vharris

just wondering if you could tell me what brand of contact lens you found helpful.
I am at my wits end....I have been wearing contacts for ten years and now i cant wear them cause my eyes are soo dry. its very depressing as i have a very high perscirption and my glasses make my eyes look very small. i m not a vain person but aside from my eyes i dont really like anything else about me. Thanks

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

A few years back I also was diagnosed with this disease-I hate my glasses and loved my contacts, but now my dry eyes are so painful,I use restasis,Lotemax, low doses of antibiotic, have had permanent plugs in both eyes but had to have right one removed and disolvable one in its place. Tomorrow I go to have plugs put in upper eyelids also. Have to take Vicodin 3 times daily just to be able to function normally.I can put on contacts in for short periods of time.Have to "pace" the use of my eyes-can't read or be on computer long periods of time or pain is horrific.I use drops in eyes every hour.Always aware of pain.My quality of life has dramatically changed. No one had ever heard of this disease including me until I was diagnosed. MY RA doctor seems more in tune with my pain than my opth.Dr. somtimes I will just put one contact in . I take Lutein, Omeaga 3, fish oli, codliver oil, turrine and a boatful of other herbs and vitamins. I'm hesitant about getting my tearducts cauterized.Dr. said it is easier to get that done them to have to uncauterize them.I don't know if this helps you or not. But you are not alone.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

I had to stop wearing contacts many years ago due to dry eyes. But I don't have severe enough symptoms to get the punctal plugs so I am stuck with glasses.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

Had plugs and had to get removed due to discomfort. Tried restasis no help. Wear gas perm lenses 14+ hours per day, some dryness, use drops freq.
Can't wear glasses or soft lenses, so this is it!

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

try air optics. they have multifocal too. if your eyes are getting too dry with the contacts, remember to use the solutions as often as needed and especially before you take them out.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

Chillip 1123 - My eyes are like yours - extremely dry eyes and gas permeable lenses. I've worn them for almost 40 years! For the last couple of years, though, I have to take them out every couple of hours to clean them. I think the mucus my eyes make to compensate for the dryness gets on the contacts making them blurry and dirty. It is so uncomfortable! And also very annoying at work, when all of a sudden, I can't see unless I take them out to clean them. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm considering the plugs - but haven't been to a doctor yet.

Re: Sjogren's and contact lenses/punctal plugs?

maple 3 - a boston scleral is a half circle that covers the entire portion of the exposed eye. it is meant to be used for people that can barely see anymore because of extremely severe dry eye. you fill it with a liquid solution and insert them in the eye. they are difficult to insert since they are very large. this is usually a last resort for people that are near blind with drynes and other conditions. once inserted the eyes will bulge.
