I suspect that I have Sjogren's and it seems to come in flares. I have several other autoimmune diseases and have a blood test marker that indicated I could have multiple autoimmune diseases. I've had problems off and on with dry eyes, dry mouth, vaginal dryness, etc... But, something that I've noticed that I'm not sure the reason is that I haven't been able to cry for years. I can tear up a little on occasion, but try as I might, I can't have a good tear- dripping cry.
I thought, perhaps, it was medication related as I take a SSRI. But, during the time that I weaned off of it, I still could not cry. I have been under a lot of stress lately and I know that crying would be a good stress reliever, but... nothing. And, I have a lot to cry about. Anyone else have this problem, and could it be related to Sjogren's?
Any response would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
When I was first diagnosed with Sjogrens due to extreme dry eyes, bloodwork, etc. I thought I could not cry either. However, I did read that those with Sjogrens can cry from emotional issues. It is some kind of different eye wetting mechanism. This rang true for a few months ago due to something painful I was dealing with. I hadn't cried for almost a year but was still able to cry and though I was going through something painful I was so happy to be able to cry. I've been on Restasis for almost a year and has dramatically helped with severe dry eyes.
Normally, I just tear up and that's it. It's so hard to say unless you go through an extremely painful experience - which I can say - no one wants to go though to see if they can still cry. You might check with an eye doctor or your rheumatologist, too. Hope this helps!

Best Regards,
Hi hi, I have only recently discovered that I have a hard time getting tears when crying. I rarely cry so hadn't noticed it until about a month ago when I lost a friend. My eyes really swelled up and became red. Later I had tears in my nose but they were very thick. It was kind of a freakout to me. Something new all the time. At other times when my eyes get very dry and I haven't really noticed how dry I will tear and tear as my body tries to compensate. I do have Sjogren's. My best wishes in figuring it all out. cbg10
