Since I was 8 years old I've had a scalp problem. I used to think it was dandruff and my mom said if I washed my hair every day it would go away. But I don't think it's dandruff and washing my hair makes it worse.

My problem isn't an oily buildup on the scalp ... definitions of dandruff don't fit what I have ... what I have is that my scalp peels off. It's in patches on my scalp, but covers most of the scalp, and this happens on my eyebrows as well.

Recently I had a couple of spots about the size of a quarter ... one on my head, a couple on my back ... where the skin got a bit tough and dry and a little scaly ... I would pick at it, the skin would come off, it would come back ... I pick at things without thinking, so I was pickpickpicking at the head spot ... and finally it went away for the most part. Now it feels more like regular skin but is dry and flakes instead of peels off. Also, it's no longer pink, as it was before.

I was told this sounds like psoriasis. I have ulcerative colitis so I'm plagued with a few auto-immune problems as well--chronic eye infections and such. I wouldn't have access to a dermatologist for a while but since this isn't anything more than simply irritating (I hate lotion and hate having to take it with me all the time ... and then my picking habit has made me dedicate much time of my life to getting the dead skin off my scalp). If I was still in school where the other students accused me of having lice ... well, it would be a problem. I just want to know what it sounds like (a consensus) and if there's anything in the non-prescription realm I can do for it.

In the meantime ... I'll be over here picking at dead skin.
