Anyone else think that dermatologists are obnoxious? - Skin Problems Message Board

Maybe it's just me, but I really can't stand most dermatologists. They seem to have the same sort of obnoxious paternalistic attitude that used to pervade medicine decades ago, but fortunately seems to have become unacceptable in most fields of medicine.

Have I just had really bad luck with dermos? I get alone fine with all the other doctors I encounter. Anyone else?

Yeah, I've had trouble with them too. I can't get them to listen to me. My so-called "eczema" is probably dermatitis herpetiformis, which is the skin form of celiac disease (which my mom has, my grandfather had, it's heredity...) The derms just take a quick glance and say "eczema" without hearing my background or anything. And heaven forbid I should want to find out what's triggering my eczema. ARGH!

Mine is nice but she just wants to get me out of the office. When I ask her what could be triggering it she just blows it off as hormonal - and says that food/nothing else could be causing it. She gives me no advice about diet/exercise/nutrients etc she just wants to give me my monthly prescription and send me on my way.

Though I've found doctors in general to be like this too. For years I suffered really bad pains in my face, neck, and back and my doctor just kept telling me either 'you're stressed' or 'its all in your mind'. Turns out that I had a tooth infection that the dental x-rays weren't detecting and which caused an infection of the ear and caused swelling in the jaw/facial/neck muscles. Had they spent any time listening they may have figured it out and I wouldn't have had to spend 3 years of my life in constant pain.

Doctors are most DEFINATELY the WORST listeners.

I've been quite lucky. Although I haven't had to see my dermo for quite some time (knock on wood) he's always been nice and willing to answer any questions for as long as it takes. I wish everyone could have a dermo like mine.

My dermo is actually pretty good--he suggested skin testing to figure out the cause of my eczema. But he is one of the best known in town, and he is also the most weel-known cosmetic surgeon around here. The only problem with that is I don't get to talk to him much because he is so busy--I ususally have to talk to his assistants.

In my experience I have found most doctors are terrible listeners. They really do just want to give you a prescription and send you on your way. I am constantly switching doctors, and I hope someday I find one I like. I have learned a lot more by doing research on the internet and from reading posts on this website.
