Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

: I go through spells of having terribly itchy arms - mostly forearms, sometimes shoulders. Feels more like little *****les or bits, but there is not a mark on my skin to show for it. Mostly happens at night, and the itching sensation gets so bad that it wakes me up. Usually I try putting a cold washcloth on the itching area. If I scratch once, then I have to scratch twice, etc etc. Sometimes, by the time I wake up in the morning, I have scratched so much that I have small scabs on my forearms.

: I have no idea what is causing this. I have many allergies (food, medications, airborne, etc), but can't seem to relate this to anything. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

I also have had this for nearly ten years but have found no I.D. or cure except for ice so that I can sleep. It definitely comes in phases. I wonder if it might have been triggered by an exteme stress situation and then is re-triggered by even a slight similar bodily response because I feel certain that it is a nerve condition (I am only guessing) that results in the nerve endings in my arms being stimulated. Perhaps over-active immune system. I also have another skin condition (Undiagnosed) except by a Homeopath that he relates to stress and my Liver. This is a visible outbreak of small hard bumps aslmost symetrically on my fingers (Starting on the joints) and elbows inner biceps and corresponding sides of my chest. This develops into a frenzy of clusters that I want to 'Tear off'.............the diagnosis...........overactive immune system??
I would really like to find what is causing these and do something! The latter occurs much less now I have less stress in my life. Does anyone have any ideas for relieving this or what might be causing it?

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

I too have this same problem - and have found ice packs to be the only form of relief. I have no known allergies and decided to keep a food diary. Whenever symptoms occurred (sometimes only slight itching and other times I wanted to take my skin off), I would write down everything I had eaten over the previous few hours. It appeared that food acid 330 was the common link. I stopped eating foods with food acid 330 (and there was heaps of them that I would eat on a regular basis) and went for considerable periods without the painful itchy forearms. I have looked into what food acid 330 is and it is only a manufactured form of citric acid and is not normally known to cause allergic reactions. One source of information stated that often the process used to make the food acid can produce a type of MSG and that is what people react to. Obviously, I still suffer sometimes which is why I often look on the internet and subsequently found you. I don't know if cutting out the food acid really did the trick or whether it was just that I started looking at what was in the foods I was eating and as a result tried to eat more naturally.

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

I have the exact same thing. The only constant seems to be exposure to the sun.
Sometimes one arm and sometimes both. An ice pack does work and so does benadryl at night. Anyone found any answers to the cause.

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

Since my last comments I have found relief. I attack this on two fronts because I'm not sure which is causing it but they both seem to work.

1. I use hair spray every day. I have found that if I put my robe on before I spray my hair........voila! No itching.

2. Also, I have started using sun block on my forearms only when I cut the grass, go fishing, go to a BBQ or any chance of sun exposure.

Whichever works I haven't itched in months.

Good luck!

Red face Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

Wow, am I glad I found this website..........I actually thought I was going crazy, and everybody that I tell my problem to, thinks I'm crazy too.........

My arms drive me nuts.........there are times I scratch till I bleed, and you are right......ICE and benedryl are the only things that work. I have to put ice packs on my arms so I can sleep.

It doesnt happen every night and I wish I knew what triggers it.

There is no rash, no bumps, no sores (until I scratch myself raw). I have tried everything. I work at a physicians office and believe me I have tried every cream we have......nothing works.

I went to a dermatologist and she looked at me like I was nutz.......tried to tell me I had folliculitis......and told me to use Amlactin lotion.......and gave me a cream that had lidocaine in it........it was worthless.......

This started about 3 years ago and I dont understand it at all.

I saw in a previous note that somebody said it felt like pins, tingling, *****les, etc....but no rash.....thats exactly what mine is like, and it can drive you crazy. Also mostly happens at night.......

I'm just finally glad to see that I'm not crazy and I'm not the only person out there with this terrible affliction.........

Let me know if theres anybody out there that knows what this is.....

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

And I thought I was the only one!

Both my forearms get terribly itchy 4-5 times a day (mostly at night), lasting about 10 minutes. I have not been able to determine a trigger, nor have any remedies worked. Benadryl doesn't help, so I don't think it's an allergy.

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

Hi,

I too have really painfully itchy forearms. I have connected two possible triggers -- bright sunlight and Cranberry Juice. So, maybe there is artificial vitamin C in this juice?

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

I also have/had the same condition. Been going to a different chiro and the problem stems from neck and upper shoulders being out of place. Creams did not help me either.

Smile Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

I found this web-site for this very problem. My forearms are the same way,I wear sweatshirts to keep warm but they seem to aggrevate the problem. My arms don't itch all the time, but when they do it drives me totally out of my mind. Also, there is a stinging, burning sensation when I scratch them that is pretty painful.Interestingly enough, the itching will be on each arm, directly across from the other arm. The only thing that gives any relief for me is Gold Bond lotion.

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

For several years,at the end of the summer, I would have terrible itching on both of my shoulders. It was so intense, I thought I would lose my mind! Someone said it was probably sun poisoning. So I started always wearing sleeves (no sleeveless tops) all the time. It worked for years, until this past summer when I tried swimming all day with no coveruup. Well, I got the shoulder itch. So I'm sure that is what caused it. But now my forearm is doing the same thing. It itches and stings so bad. After several days, a few red bumps showed up, but I don't know if that was from scratching or not. It is the middle of winter and I haven't been exposed to that much sun, so I don't know what is causing this. Ice and Benadryl help a little, but I wish I knew for sure what was causing this awful itch.

Re: Painful itchy forearms with no visible rash

I had that same problem, and found relief by using tea tree oil on the itchy areas.
