non medical treatment for eczema? - Skin Problems Message Board

My 3 year old son has eczema. His skin feels like sandpaper and he has red scabs on several parts of his body. The problem is that he won't let me put any type of cream/lotion on him. He says it burns and starts screaming. Does anyone know of any non medicated lotions that won't sting? He has steroidal creams, but the dr says not to use to often due to the fact he's so young. Does anyone have eczema and know what doesn't hurt?

Hi, my 5yr daughter has had problems since birth with her skin & eczema. She is very sensive to stuff put on her skin and the softnest of our water, etc. She uses Elidel for maintenance, keeping the break outs from flare ups. She uses steriods when the Elidel isn't working. We cream her from head to toe with Avon's Moisture Therapy Hand Cream everyday to keep her skin soft. Her worse spots for the eczema are the inside of her elbows, back of neck, back of knees, tops of hands, inside wrist, behind ears, around her mouth, eyes, etc. We have a peds dr who is very familar w/ eczema as her daughter had it so bad they wrapped her in plastic wrap. My daughter hates the lotions and cream but has come to understand that gets worse when it is not taken care of. She will probably always have problems with her skin. Our insurance just changed the 1st of the yr and I actually have a derm. dr in town I can go to. I have an appointment later this month to see what they say.

hey ! I have excima too ! Well, i went to the derma and he gave me this stuff called protopic. Its real greasy though.... but it reallly works. My dryness and redness was cleared within 2 days!! Ask your derma about that. And it doesnt hurt.

My son was the exact same way and we tried the different creams. My family doctor told me to put a wet wrung out wash cloth on the area and let it set for 5 min. and then put on vaseline and wrap with cotton strips and a safety pin to hold it in place. We did this at night and during the day we did not use the strips but morning noon and dinnertime the same process with the wash cloth and vaseline. This really helped the healing. We finally got it so we only had to do the am and pm ritual and just vaseline frequently during the day. Make sure the washcloth is warm. You may also want to try aquaphor creme. It is a lot like vaseline but more staying power. Parents use it for diaper rash.
