Reid, my grandson is in so much discomfort and pain. He breaks out all over his body with ichy bumps, welts, hives, severe allegator skin (so many in one area) etc. All of these words describe this. He can't control the scratching and creates bleeding and raw sores everywhere. He wakes every night crying and scratching.
We put him in a warm bath with oatmeal. This seems to relax him for only a little while.
He has been asleep and awoke a few minutes ago crying and brokeout within a matter of a couple of minutes.
He has had allergy tests and been to a dermatologist. The doctor says that he doesn't test positive enough to anything to cause this situation. HELP! HELP!
He was prescribed prednisone for two weeks and that cleared him up but he can't stay on that drug, especially at his age.
It seems that your grandson may have some sort of allergy to either something he eats or his skin is in contact with. You may want to experiment by eliminating foods like cow's milk, peanuts, wheat, eggs and soy which can cause allergic symptoms.
Make sure you apply a good moisturizing cream, ointment to his skin after bathing ( make sure it doesn't have added frangrance). You might need to change the detergent used in washing his clothes and his bath soap.
Some websites recommend fish oil, vitamin a and c and zinc for their antinflammatory/healing effects. Discuss this with your pediatrician.
When my 4 year old son is really bad I give him Benadryl at bedtime. It helps him to sleep and control the itching. I also use plain Glaxal base cream. It's just a plain white cream with nothing in it. Here in Canada you can get a no name version at Loblaws.
I also use the Aveeno oil baths but it sounds like you are doing that already. Try switching laundry soaps to a hypoallergenic soap like the previous post suggested. You may have to rinse his clothes twice to get the extra residue out.
I would get him allergy tested again in a year or two as something may show up then.
Poor thing! I have been there, and there's hope. Benadryl is a must, we were told to give my son when he was 3years, about 2-3 teaspoon of benadryl at night to help with the discomfort,(check with his doctor) and then some motrin for the pain and it will help with the inflamation. Also, put about 2 cap full of bleach in his bath water, this help kills bacteria. I recomend using all cetiphil products, the soap and the cream. Do not use any vaseline products, b/c even though it may help hold moisture, it'll also keep bacteria in and makes it hard for the skin to breath. Perdisolon (sp) is good stuff, but you only use that for so long. Make him an appt with a allergist to see what's triggering his allergic reaction. And then also with a dermatolgist, You might have to try some non-sterid creams for awhile too. My son had eczema, found out he's allergic to mold and do dandruff. He's now 5 years, and everyonce in awhile he'll have some flare ups, but nothing compare to the up all night, itching, scratching. He was 1 1/2 when we first discovered it. Good Luck,
Sorry, i forgot that you mentioned that you took him to get an allergy test and to a dermatoligist. I would try another allergy test in 6 months.
Like the others, Change his soaps, but you have to do the whole house, not just him. Everyones sheets, towels, clothes. Try that for about 2 weeks, then start with foods, or look at him when he goes outside to play, does he get worse. Anyways, Good Luck!

Thank You for any help and suggestions. Ron
When changing out the detergent you use on his clothes... also Stop using dryer sheet based fabric softener if you do... It leaves residue on the clothes that causes some alergies.
