perioral dermatitis?

For about a month now ive had what looks like horrible acne around my mouth and chin area, it'll go down a little bit every now and then but is alwys there. i havn't suffered from acne for years and at first thought it might have been stubble rash from my boyfriend, lol, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere though. I looked online and found what i think it is, from pictures and description it sounds like perioral dermatitis. it says that this is generally caused by using steroid cream and stuff like that. i can't work out what could have caused it however. does anyone have anymore info about anything else it could be its really getting me down

Re: perioral dermatitis?

I would see a dermatologist to get a definite answer on that. I coudn't tell you what the cause is as there are a lot of reasons it could of showed up. It usually does show up due to overuse of steroid creams but there are other underlying causes. It could also be seborrheic dermatitis...they both look similiar, however Periorial dermatitis is more likely in females.

The usual treatment of something like that involves oral antibiotics....most likely tetracycline.

Hope it works out for ya.

Re: perioral dermatitis?

I have PD... i thought it was acne and went to a dermatologist. he said its not acne and diagnose me with PD and Rosacea.. i haven't been able to get rid of it.. my GP says dermatatitis is something you can't get rid of and it will come and go.. i took Doxycycle (two courses) an it helped but didn't clear it up completely.. good luck with it.. for me one of the issues is how itchy it is.. make sure you use a gently cleanser.. and stop using anything with steroids as apparantly that makes it worse

Re: perioral dermatitis?

I had a similar condition and thru trial and error of trying to figure out what it was I discovered it was my toothpaste. I had changed brands and the new one had different flavorings that I was sensitive to. Might be worth looking into.
