Excema- how to control it?

My boyfriend has had excema continuously for nearly a year now. He changed jobs about 2.5 years ago (became a mechanic) and within around 1.5 years after, he started getting excema on his hands.
I don't know if its the oil &chemicals used at his work/food he eats/or an allergy he has with something.

Its sore, itchy, scaly, and very red and covers most of his hands (even some of the palm). At times, it weeps puss. He has used cortisone creams, emu oil moisturiser, triamcinolone cream etc.

His fingernails have even become soft near the nail bed (& are very painful) and have deep ridges/dents developing near the top of the fingernail. We don't know if this is a side effect from the cream he is applying? Has anyone had this happen to them?

If anyone has tried anything that has made a significant improvement to getting rid of/controlling their excema, please help. I know that diet plays a fairly large part in controlling it as well.... but am hoping there is something to alleviate the symptoms in the meantime

Thanks in advance
