Itch Mites : Nasty Nasty

I have, like many Northern Illinoisans, been infected with Itch Mites. I have dozens of red, itchy bumps on my feet (top and bottom). They actually look like tiny mosquito bites.

If you get these, benadryl cream really does nothing. I'm going to try soaking my feet in hydrogen peroxide to see if it helps at all. It's really not something I want to go to the doctor over.

Also, one article said that Itch Mites are actually Scabies. Anyone know if this is true? Cause if it is, I'm screwed...

Well, I've never heard them called itch mites before... but after research, yeah, it's a subspecies of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). Why do you say "screwed?" It's just a skin thing. Incedentally, the only way to get a true diagnosis is by a doctor's visit. They can also give you the best way to get rid of 'em.

I saw a site that suggested using a lice shampoo, and an alternate treatment of having a Borax bath, but I would go to the doctor if I were you.

Re: Itch Mites : Nasty Nasty

I've been treating them like mosquito bites. I read a site that said that is the totally wrong way to do it if it is scabies.

I have never heard of them and have NO idea how to treat them... but just a suggestion - for the itching... it may sound wierd but Vicks vapor rub is great for insect bite itching. I have used it for mosquito bites & ant bites for my kids. They said it helps. Maybe it provide you with some relief.

Re: Itch Mites : Nasty Nasty

Yeah, Benedryl is an antihistamine, and intended for allergic reactions (a lot like the reaction to a mosquito bite). Unless you're having that crazy kind of hive-like reaction, it wouldn't do much good.
The research I did suggested that using a lice shampoo would help (you can use it on your skin, but I'd be careful with your privates, it may be too harsh). Borax makes sense, too, when you think about it. But really, you should go to a doctor, get a good diagnosis and treatment plan. It may be that there is a prescription medication that would be more effective.

Good luck!
