Rash, Redness In Lower Leg Post Knee Replacement Surgery

My stepfather had the latest procedure in knee replacement surgery. Afterwards, he has been bothered with severe redness, itching, flaking, peeling of his lower leg area and nothing will resolve it. He seems to think due to poor circulation since he is elderly, but I think it is allergic to something surgery related. Like to latex or things they put on your legs to force circulation. Nothing topical works, so I tend to think it is systemic, (internal) allergic reaction. Benadryl is only a little helpful, but isn't there something natural that would boost immune system for the skin like a particular vitamin or something???? Thanks for listening.
