Hives from NOT eating anything

Basically to make a long story short, for 2 years now I have been getting severely debilitating hives when I don't eat anything for 5 to 8 hours. When I say severely debilitating I mean I don't get itchy but rather my skin is on fire and I physically can not do anything except sit on the floor or if I am home during an attack taking a super hot shower helps. The hives themselves form into clusters that have risen an inch and 1/2 from the skin or my entire body turns the color of a firetruck. I have looked on the internet (found nothing about people getting hives from not eating for long periods of time) and have gone to doctors seeking advice only to be turned away as a hypochondriac. I used to take a daily regimen of claratin but that eventually stopped working so I am forced to constantly eat something for fear of getting them during work or class which is slimming my wallet and widening my hips and most of all enervates my days with constant anxiety of getting them. Please if anyone has any ideas or suggestions or a miracle that one knows what this is PLEASE respond!

Hi there

My name is Jim (37 y/o)and I too get hives (mostly on the face, rarely on the body) after not eating anything after 7-8 hours or more. This has gone on for years and I have not been able to figure out the trigger. I do know it's not due to a specific food because it can happen any time of day and I have monitored what I eat and it never seems to be the same thing. About 10-11 years ago I started getting hives right after I ate something (anything) and that lasted a couple of years. Then it changed to if I don't eat. I think it might have something to do with stress. I control it by always keeping a box of Kellogs breakfast bars or something similiar. It's cheap and I can always have at least one on me or in my laptop carrying case. Feel free to email me if you would like to discuss further. To clarify - after I don't eat anyting for 7-8 hours and then eat a large dinner or meal then that is when I get them. I don't seem to get them if I just don't eat anything. Sometimes there are a few and sometimes there could be 10 or more. There have been a few occassions where I did not eat for 10 hours then ate a big meal with family then the hives actually became raised 1 inch welts on my face. They rarely itch or burn but I certainly can feel them and usually can feel them starting.

You don't have to get hives from food. You can get it from your soap, washing detergent, bed sheets. Hives is just a skin reaction from allergies. You can even get it from your pet. Best thing to do is to use natural and soap free products. Wash and change your sheets every few days and keep your hands clean at all times. Bacteria can enter the skin and cause infections. You can take antihistamines to reduce the itchyness, also calamine lotions or pinetarsol solutions to soak in the bath.
