I had somethng similar last year, it started on the back of my ear and spread. I tried a lot of creams and what finally helped with the itch and dryness was whole milk :S
I used a cotton to put the cold milk, then let it dry for 15-20 mins, then I just washed with fresh water. I avoided using other creams like for a week. It was a miracle! the downsize... well the smell while it dries.
When I felt better, I just started using non-allergenic / non perfumed body cream and baby oil.
