itchy; no visible rash

over spring break while in another state, I got a bad itchiness that started very suddenly. It kept spreading - first my legs would itch, then my arms, then my stomach, back, even face. I thought it was something I was allergic to in the new surroundings but I came home and someone I live with has the same symptoms here so maybe it's something contagious that we both caught? Lotion seems to help for awhile but it comes back. It's extremely itchy and only red or white from where I've been scratching, no bite marks or anything. Any ideas?
