what should I expect at a dermatologist checkup?

Im a 25 year old guy that hasn't been to a doctor in 10 years and am finally gonna go see a dermatologist after getting checked up by a dentist and regular doctor recently.

I specifically need help with full body breakouts and acne/blackheads on my face, and a mole in my arm pit that is raised.

So i'll mention what im concerned about of course but what else should happen? I full body exam? If so do they put you in a gown and go over every inch of you with a magnifying glass or something? And about how long would it take to do a full body exam?

I just wanted to see if a complete head to toe skin exam is normal for a skin checkup or if I go in their will they only try and treat the specific problem.

I don't have insurance and will be paying out of pocket and want to make sure I get checked out the right way.

thanks!

I never have had a full body check at the dermatologist, and I have body acne. They'll just ask you to lift up your shirt or something.

Re: what should I expect at a dermatologist checkup?

My dermatologist basicly just asked me what I was concerned about. As I have a lot of moles (which seem to develop at the drop of a hat) I asked him about those. He basicly just looked them over (no magnifing glass ) and told me I was just a 'molely' person and that none of them were anything I should be concerned about. While this 'revelation' didn't exactly thrill me, it WAS a relief to know they were 'normal'. I originally went to him for Roseachea (however you spell it) and the meds he gave me got it under control fairly quickly....
[This message has been edited by Sallen (edited 08-01-2001).]

Re: what should I expect at a dermatologist checkup?

Hi, I've been going to a derm for a little over 2 years now. I have acne on my chest, and back and I usually only have to lift my shirt up. I have had to take my shirt off twice and put on a gown so he could check my moles which he ended up removing two of them. When he checks moles he just looks at them and if they look funny he usually measures them. But I never have to strip if that is what you mean. I hope this helps.
