Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

A week ago I got what I thought were little bug or spider bites on my calves. In the last week the number of bumps has multiplied incredibly and now they have spread up my knees to mid-thigh. There are tons of them!

The bumps are VERY little, even unnoticeable -- except when scratched, when they puff up a little and get a little redder. They don't "mush" together like welts... they're really individual bumps.

I'm using lanicort, which relieves the itchiness.

Any thoughts on what this is? Will it go away on its own or do I need to treat it, and how? Do I need to worry about it being contagious to other people?

(On another note... this is the most helpful and proliferous health board I've seen it - keep up the good feedback!)

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

Hey! I've got the same kind of thing on my foot at the moment! Are the bumps almost like little blisters, but really deep under the skin? I haven't gone to the doctor yet, but they have spread like wildfire over the last two days, and I have 4 new patches of them. My Mum thinks it may be dermatitis, but I really don't know.

I'll get back to you when I visit the doc, and see what he says.
Happy scratching, eh?!!

I don't know if they seem like blisters or more like bug bites. I called my doctor and (it being Memorial Day weekend and all) he could only diagnose them over the phone without seeming them, but he said it sounded like an allergic reaction of some sort. He recommended benadryl and/or caladryl.

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

I have the exact same thing! I was just getting ready to post a question about them too when I saw your post. Mine started over a week ago as 4 small bug-bite looking spots, one of each arm and one on each leg. Over the weekend they started spreading. I thought it was poison ivy, but my mom gets it all the time and says it does not look like it and it doesn't last this long. The weird thing is that most of them are almost dried up, but they are still just as itchy as when they first started. I have tried a ton of products and nothing is working! Does anyone know what poison oak or poison sumac looks like?

I get the same thing on my arms once in a while. The only thing that has worked to get rid of it was steroid creams like Topicort (perscription)... it's nasty stuff, but it works.

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

I woke up Monday (Memorial Day) morning and started scratching the palm of my right hand. Then I noticed that the itching had spread to my arms and legs. It doesn't seem to be caused from insectoids as far as I can tell being that the pink points spread all over resemble a rash. At first I thought I am experiencing my first bout ever of hives from an allergic reaction of some kind. But I saw pics online at http://www.*****.com of hives (Urticaria) that look more severe in inflammation than what I have. My best guess now is that it could be dander from the cats at a friend's house where I slept last Saturday. One of the three cats is a 14 year-old, long-haired angora that moved around like a sloth (near death I would guess) and the others were tiger-like. I remember waking up to them crawling over me on the bed. Or it could be the can of White Kidney Beans from Progresso that I had eaten Sunday night (yuck, they were really disgusting, sort of conjealing, when I went to recycle and wash the can, residue was still stuck to the inside of the can, resistent to the rinsing). Someone at work, downtown Boston, asked if the beans were from Mexico. I have no idea of course, but maybe I can find the can later and find out if the label indicates place of origin. So for now, I'm applying clay and aloe when it feels like a flare-up coming on. I read in one of my herb and natural remedy books that Parsley can be used as an antihistamine for hives since it seems the body is reacting to some foreign matter that it rejects (internally or externally) and resulting in skin irritation. Cat Dander or Beans from Hell. I guess most of the work is figuring out the cause. When I have it figured out, I'll come back with an answer, since it seems that what you have so much resembles my problem.
Good luck on your quest!
ps. I also read somewhere that it could be stress-related. I am jobhunting these days after all.

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

You could have hives. I have them and they start as little bumps in one location and spread. They came on suddenly, almost overnight. They come and go and I have found that there are many types of hives. Mine are worse during season changes. I am going to see a dermatologist about them next week. I asked my family doctor and he thought that they were just an allergic reaction, but they aren't. I went to a dermatologist years ago and he diagnosed is as contact dermatitis. Neither of them were right. I didn't know what I had until an associate at work told me what it was. I looked it up on the internet and sure enough, that is what I have. Check around and ask questions, you may or may not have them.

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

Try looking up scabies on the internet and see if it fits your symptoms. It is a small mite that burrows under the skin and multiplies and spreads. It is very itchy and sounds like what you describe. I have had this (a gift from my bf) and it needs a special prescribed cream applied daily for a couple weeks. It is pretty common and I have been told it usually comes from unsanitary places (or people) We think it may have been an employee washroom at a restaurant my bf used to work at which always had dirty cooks uniforms lying all over the place. Either way it was a miserable thing!

Re: Tiny little itchy bumps on legs - Bug bites? Rash?

Scabies in humans is caused by the same parasite that results in mange in animals. This parasite can be transferred from an animal to a human, so it may very well be that you got this from the cats at your friends house. Scabies requires prescription medication, so get to your doctor before it spreads everywhere. It can be passed from human to human as well.

There's an entire board dedicated to scabies (and other skin rashes that are similar to them...sort of) People are very helpful...
