I've taken Sonata, Ambien and Restoril and Restoril is my LEAST favorite.
Ever taken an OTC sleep medication that makes you feel miserable? Sort of a Nyquil-esque, drowning sensation? That's a lot like what Restoril feels like. It's an older medication and was prescribed to me by a doctor who had no real interest in treating my insomnia but just wanted me out of her office. I took it until I found a REAL doctor and dreaded every night of having to take it just to get a little sleep.
The listing of possible side effects reads as follows: include excessive daytime drowsiness, unusual weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, clumsiness, or unsteadiness.
I didn't experience any of these side effects except for the drug never really doing its job and keeping me asleep. And I think you're just as likely to have nightmares no matter if you take meds or not.
Hope this helps a bit.
