Hi, I'm new to the forums. My name is Christina and I'm wondering what could cause jolting before sleep. When I'm about to go to sleep, or even take a nap, I am in that half-sleep, half-wake state when all of a sudden my body has a sudden jolt sometimes. Have any of you experienced this or could give me an explanation?
I have that too!!! It's crazy. My boyfriends does it too. he will be laying in my arms about to go to sleep and then he will like jolt. I have always wonder what caused that. Hopefully, someone can help, I just thought I would tell you that I knew what you were experiencing
Christina, What you are talking about is very common. It's called a myloconic jerk and it's caused by nerve signals to the muscles before the brain totally shuts down for sleep.Some people have it worse than others but most people have it occasionally.
you can research myoclonus on the web and get a lot of good information about the phenomenon. if it becomes disruptive (i had it for years before it became severe enough that i needed medication to sleep) you should see a neurologist or a sleep specialist. benzos and other related medications can inhibit the transmission of nerve signals sufficiently to ameliorate or eliminate the myoclonic spasms/jerks. unfortunately, many of the drugs are addictive and interact poorly with alcohol (which acts on the same nerve receptors). good luck.
